I came back but the world is still a fantasy!? – Repercussions Arc – Act 2: Otherworld Hometown – 01-04: Rejection (6/7)

Hearing his dad crying so weakly for the first time as Shinichi was hugged tightly left him at a loss. He was clearly not comfortable with how intense his dad was being, but he couldn’t find it in himself to shake him off.

“…Looks like everything turned out alright,” Rinko’s boss said in a hushed voice from the entrance.

“Kayama-dono,” Rinko muttered.

Normally a relative would have to report to Rinko first, but Nobuhiko just went straight to Shinichi.

“Sorry. I told him the boy needs to ready his heart first, but who would’ve thought your husband would be such a pushy guy?”

No that’s not it, Rinko shook her head and turned to watch at her husband hugging his beloved son.

Her countenance was bright because she knew full well just how much her husband had waited for this moment.

“Oh, sorry, but we’re currently busy, so…”

Unfortunately, Rinko’s bright countenance did not last long, for not long later, a woman accompanied by two children entered into the room, pushing their way through Kayama.

Rinko knew exactly who these people were, and as soon as she saw them, she froze.

“But why? I told them not to inform them yet…”

Unfortunately, although she tried to keep the information from reaching them right away, somewhere along the lengthy process, perhaps because of her own blunder or perhaps simply because of some unfortunate happenstance, word still got to them.

“Ah, mother…”

After a second or two, Shinichi finally realized who it was that had entered into the room, and he turned to them while still in his dad’s embrace. This was the first time that Shinichi cursed his remarkable perceptiveness. Why couldn’t he remain dull like he was just a while ago? He knew he wasn’t the one at fault, but he still wanted to curse himself, for as soon as he tried to utter the word ‘mother’, he froze.

“Hmm? Oh, hey. You guys came too!
Look! It’s Shinichi! I told you he was alive!” Nobuhiko said.

Unfortunately, Nobuhiko – Shinichi’s father – was so happy that he failed to see the disturbance in both his wife and Shinichi.

He stepped out toward the newcomers with smiles and joy from embracing his son.

“!?”

Shinichi couldn’t breathe.

These people were clearly his mother and his siblings. But his mother now looked a lot older than his father even though they were the same age.

Moreover, even his siblings was looking at him with open hostility. Their gaze was sharp and oppressive.

There wasn’t a hint of happiness in his mother’s or his siblings’ faces.

Like that a chill wind had quickly put out the fire left by his dad’s embrace.

Shinichi felt he should say something, but his voice wouldn’t come out.

There was nothing similar about his mother’s and his dad’s expression. There was a heat in her face when she arrived, but it was not a good heat. Whatever emotion it was that brought about that heat, her lips were quivering.

Something was off. Shinichi understood that. And because of that, he couldn’t say anything.

Confused and agitated, he failed to move an inch.

“L-Lies.”

“What?”

Nobuhiko was shocked and Shinichi was speechless.

Because of that Shinichi ended up hearing those fatal words while standing upright.

“That child couldn’t possibly be Shinichi! That kid died a long time ago!!
Shinichi – my child – couldn’t be possibly be alive!!!”

Her eyes were dark and void of light. And there was a madness hidden behind them as she screamed out those words.

In response, her ex-husband spoke back faster than anyone else could react.

“What did you say!? Are you still spouting that shit!?
Shinichi is here! Right here! Our son has finally come home!!”

“What do you know!? You don’t know a single thing about Shinichi!!
That child drifted off into another world! He’s never coming back!!”

“Take a good look at his face and tell me that! Even the DNA tests say he’s him!
If he’s not Shinichi, then who is he!? You call yourself a mother!?”

“He’s an All D for fuck’s sake! Garesto isn’t some fun place you could just walk in and out of! There’s no way a weak kid like that could have survived it! Do you think we’re stupid!?”

A father who acknowledged the return of his son and a mother who didn’t.

Even though they were once married, not a hint of their once amiable relationship could be seen as they argued with each other.

“Why!? Why can’t you be happy that your kid is alive!?”

“Why can’t you accept that your kid is dead!?”

“Saori-san, please stop—!?”

Although Rinko hadn’t said a word until now, she thought it was too much for them to argue like this in front of Shinichi, so she tried to stop them. Unfortunately, she was stopped—

—By a hand that tugged the cuffs of her jacket from behind.

She gulped.

“Shinichi?”

“…”

Tl Note: Baby steps! We’re almost at the finish line!

Damn. That’s some backstory. At least now we know why Shinichi kept his head down.

    Thanks 4 the translation!

I know different people have different coping mechanism, but even reading this again I’m still pissed at the mother.

I pretty sure it’s not a coping mechanism. She had a mental breakdown. Ergo, she’s not coping at all. This is her having come apart at the seams completely, just about managed to pull herself back together at last, only for something to come along and shatter the reality she had finally come to terms with.
It’s not right and it’s not fair on him, but this is just how bad him going missing for 8 years has messed her up. You can’t really blame someone who’s mentally ill for how they’re acting.

I don’t think she’s only has mental problem. She just said all Ds, so maybe she can’t accept that her son drifting to another world only to return with sheetty stats.

Nah, that’s just her gasping at straws to support the frail reality she’s been living in. She literally can’t accept that he’s alive at this point because that would mean that she was wrong this whole time. It may seem petty, but this is how mental issues develop. And, though it isn’t fair to blame his dad, it is his fault for not realizing that his insistence that Shinichi was still alive was so damaging to her.

Thank the heavens that someone else was thinking of the same thing. Although, I am not sure how hellish it was for him when he was with his wife after their son disappeared, but when his wife was starting to develop mental issues and showing signs of emotional problems, I still think that it would have been a good time to get some major counselling…….I am seriously hoping that he didn’t neglect his kids or stop checking on his wife periodically (even if he did move out).

Of course, I know that everyone has a limit and can only take so much, and I know that it is not exactly fair to be more judgmental towards him. However, when the ex-wife is suffering so much and is taking care of the kids, I just feel…..like it is kinda natural for his own children to hate him, especially if he focused too much on one child while disregarding the welfare of the rest of his family at the time.

Sigh, I am really really hoping that Nobuhiko-san was supporting the rest of the family for a long time even when he started living on his own. Plus, I really hope that he didn’t leave due to refusing to say that his son is dead (even if he didn’t believe it himself). Otherwise, there really will be a problem with him and his priorities.

why would the kids be pissed at him?

    1. Countrymage Avatar

They grew up in the “your brother is dead” camp. They may also be of the crazy interpretation that he is a fake, wearing their dead brother’s face.

because they think HE is the reason of their happy family broken.
They divorce etc so obv they will hate him because their happy family is no more and shinichi come back to world but will never live with his family.
he was living was his father and new mother and having happy days before he goes to school

    3. Jay of the Void Avatar

Because, though it’s unfair to him, he’s basically the reason for their parents divorce, their mother being driven to the brink of insanity, and the hard life they had to live because their broken mother could barely make ends meet.

You know, he officially had less than a snowball’s chance in hell of being alive, since, you know, he was supposed to appear in a place that none same would like to venture into fully equipped and with a team and support… So… Yeah…

Oh, and he was gone for 8 years, but hasn’t changed much…

Most couples with a murdered child divorce. I know Shinichi wasnt murdered, but the lack of closure may even have been worse for the mother’s mental state. Still, if the father held on, why shouldn’t the mother? It’s a shame to see a family act like that. So heartwrenching. Thanks for the chapter.
Can’t help but think that Shinichi displaying his abilities may give her piece of mind, but the all D’s is probably an excuse on her part.

    1. Truth Avatar

I understand too. However, we do have to admit that not everyone has the mental strength to continue believing in the continued living of their child, since that belief also brings forth despair and desperation. In fact, despite the dad being strong enough to continuing believing and supporting the search for his child, I am still hoping that he wasn’t obsessed/foolish/stubborn enough to ruin his marriage and the lives of his kids for that single belief.

I know. I know. Maybe, I am super biased, but from what I know so far, it seems like he could have probably saved his marriage or lessen the hate of his kids as long as he had made earnest efforts. I am now afraid to discover what choices he made and how he dealt with his family after Shinichi disappeared. After all, if it is as fear, I may really end up hating the dad for either his incompetence or his obsession/stubborn that caused him to sacrifice his family…………..Maybe, if the reason for divorce was simply just the pain from loosing a child (which causes them to despair whenever they’re are together), it would be bearable, but if any other reasons were involved (as I fear), I might really….hate the dad to the bones.

Thanks for the chapter!!! However, as for that Nakamura Rinko woman……I don’t know how to feel about her, but I do have a slight urge to slap her for trying to involve herself in their family reunion more than necessary. I know that it was for good intentions. I also know that my slight irritation is a bit biased.

However, in her situation, she should know that she shouldn’t rush things and shouldn’t push get too involved. I mean, you would think she learned something by having all the children of her husband’s previous marriage (before Shinichi arrived) hating her. The best options would be to make a good impression but not get too intimate and allow time to help her out.

Of course, I do support her ideal of stopping the argument and trying to contact her husband first. However, not telling Shinichi’s mother and the rest of his family just feels too wrong, and it is easy to misinterpret if she wasn’t careful. It would have been better to maybe delay them and have some trust coworker to delay his mother while warning her about who is with her son at the moment.
