Jigglypuff's Diary

The Hero-Slaying Bandit – Prologue: Until I Killed a Hero

The Hero-Slaying Bandit

Synopsis: The protagonist is an adventurer and a bandit. A rascal of sort.

Varde is the third son of a noble, and is a bastard who was born of an affair with the maid. Still, his family did take care of him until he was five years old, allowing him to live, although with much shame. On his fifth birthday, however, his magic affinity was tested, and his affinity was found to be poor. In the end, he was chased away from his house, sent to his mother’s relatives, and forbidden from associating his name with his noble relatives.

After that, he went out on an adventure with the brother of his mother, his uncle. As his uncle was an adventurer, he was able to learn many techniques to allow him to survive.

Before long, he was able to stand up by himself. And in order to live in this world of injustice, he dirtied his hands.

This is the tale of living in a fantasy world based on the moral values of the protagonist, Varde.

This story is R15 and will have brutal depictions, as well as light sexual descriptions.

TL Note: Not picking this up, but will translate it from time to time unless someone else picks it up.

Author’s note: It’s my first time, so this is sort of an experimental post. I’ll keep posting chapters for as long as I can.

Prologue: Until I Killed a Hero

On a pleasant day with good weather, I stopped by a certain town.

That town was currently under attack.

(These guys sure picked an interesting place to come out)

This world is a world of irrational mayhem and mysterious power. Which goes to say that it’s a world made up of magic. There are monsters, and there are also species other than humans living normally in this world.

I don’t have any intention of fighting for the villagers here though. As for why, well that’s because I’m sort of a bandit myself.

On the outside, I’m an adventurer, so I won’t steal or mug people while I’m in the village. But in places like the highway, the forest, or the labyrinths, well that’s a whole another story. If there’s someone I don’t like, I’m gonna beat him black and blue. If there’s something to plunder, I’ll take it. And if there’re good women, they’re mine.

It should be easy to understand if you just categorize me under a stereotypical evil adventurer.

There’s no reason for someone like that to interfere in the pillaging and massacring that’s currently taking place before me. But if it becomes disadvantageous for me, then things change.

As I watched on with apathy, I heard consecutive screams and roars bellow out.

(Did the villagers start fighting back? It feels a bit late though.)

The sound of the echoing sword was brimming with might. It was not the sort of sound you’d hear from villagers fighting.

(The exchange is a bit odd…)

It doesn’t really suit my character, but my attention was piqued. So I moved my legs, and I headed toward the source of that sound.

I met a seemingly small fry bandit along the way who attacked me, but I dealt with it easily. I continued deep into the village like that, swinging my sword in high spirits as I made my way. Then as I was walking, I spotted a boy dressed in unusual clothing. He fought the bandits with strength that exuded the aura of invincibility.

From a glance, there were times when he was being swung by the blade, but he’s definitely attacking well. However, the way he handled his body reeked of a beginner, and his fighting style was a bit reckless.

I don’t really care much what sort of person this guy is, but he gets on my nerves.

“Ha–ha ha!! It’s useless, bandit-scums. You are all nothing but trash before my power!”

The boy over there was jeering for some reason.
Apparently he fancies himself a hero or something. Normally I’d just let it go saying, “Right, right…” but for some reason I seem to be physically unable to tolerate this guy.

The boy who cut the Mohawk-cut bandit with a lone stroke seemed to be grumbling to himself as he continued to attack the bandits that entered his vision.

The friends of Mr. Mohawk over there continued the fight with the boy. Eventually they managed to bring him to a position that was convenient for me. They seemed to be resisting well, but from the looks of it the boy was fighting while trying something out.

Slowly, I wielded my crossbow, and I aimed it. When a suitable time appeared, I fired it. Without even checking whether it had hit his shoulder or not, I immediately ran toward the boy. As I calculated the amount of time the boy would need to turn around, I swept his legs away, and broke his posture. Then as he fell, I landed a “fatal” wound on him.

“…!!”

The boy groaned out a voice that could not be voiced, and then he collapsed.

There’re plenty of people like this. They have plenty of power, but have little experience.

Just as I was about to pierce the boy again to make sure he’s dead, his body fell apart like sand, and then he vanished.

(Huh? Wasn’t he human?)

Human aside… this is actually my first time seeing a corpse fall apart as if it were sand.
Even monsters would leave behind a corpse. That’s why it’s possible to cut their body up, and bring back some spoils that could be sold for much coin.

While I was having my common sense overturned, I noticed that something resembling a monocle was left behind.

Winner keeps everything.

Following the philosophy of adventurers, I picked up the monocle. And while the bandits were still pillaging the village, I put it on.

“The hero that was undergoing tutorial has died. Confirmed. The bonus power granted has now been materialized. Now confirming the new owner.”

Apparently I… killed the hero?

As we exterminated the lizard doubles, the giant ants, and the pickle snaps that were in our way, we headed west.

“Have you grasped the trail of the orcs?” I asked.

The druid Gi Za nodded to my inquiry.

“Of course,” he replied.

Gi Za and the newly evolved Druid, the wind user, Gi Do, were positioned within the center of the magic-using goblins that were at the center of the army formation.

Moving in front were the wide-opened eye, Gi Jii, and the receiver of the divine protection of the Sword God (Ra Baruza), Gi Go. The next highest class to me is the noble class Gi Go, so I’m having the goblins from Gi Gu’s faction that specialize in coordination follow him to support him.

Substituting for Gi Ga who couldn’t move due to his injuries, is the spear-specialist, Gi Da. Positioned in the back are he and the one who received the divine protection of the Mad God (Zu Oru), Gi Zu.

The ones who I sent a day ahead are the beast warrior, Gi Gi, and the stealthy Gi Ji. It’s thanks to intermittent communication with them that we are able to follow the orcs’ trails.

“King, a messenger from Lord Gi Gi has arrived,” said Gi Za.

What entered my vision was the figure of a dog big enough to tower over the goblins, running through the meadows.

As I nodded to Gi Za’s words, I ordered the army following from behind to stop.

“Enemy, seems… divided to two groups,” reported Gi Gi’s subordinate, who could also control beasts, after he spoke with the dog.

So they’re separated into two groups…

“Do you know how many there are?” I asked.

Gi Gi’s goblin subordinate shook his head.

“The direction?”

The goblin pointed toward the west and the north.

Seeing that, I gave out my orders.

“Gi Go, take three groups under you, and meet the enemy in the north,” I commanded.
“Understood! Gi Jii, you’re coming with me,” said Gi Go.
“Yes,” quickly nodded Gi Jii as he began to run with Gi Go and the others.

If it’s the noble class Gi Go, then he should have enough strength to contest the orcs by himself. Moreover, with Gi Jii who specializes in coordinating with him, they should be able to manage even against 6 orcs.

Of course, I’ve also taken into my calculations psychological pressure they are receiving from the ones being chased.

“Gi Da, take the lead. Gi Zu, go protect the back. We’re moving out!”

I took a mouthful of jerky into my mouth, and bit it.

With the tamed dog in lead, we chased after the orcs.

◇◆◆

It’s been two days since we began pursuing the orcs. We quietly moved in the dead of the night.

Eyes that work in the dark are really convenient. The darkness of the night is considered a natural enemy for humans, but since coming to this world, it’s become an ally.

The path the orcs traversed was not a complicated forested path, but rather, a relatively open area. It’s true that this path is faster, but this also means that the pursuers’ attacks will become relentless.

If they can run quickly, then we can also chase quickly.

Moreover, they’re carrying wounded orcs with them. We confirmed it in the meadows this afternoon. There are patches of blood here and there, so they’re definitely carrying their wounded with them.

I don’t know how far they’ve gotten by now, but I want to close the distance while we still have the upper hand. It would be pointless to attack when the ones tired are us after all.

I looked around the surrounding area as I took a mouthful of my meat jerky. Then I followed the guide dog.

Suddenly, at that moment, a pungent smell wafted to my nose, causing me to stop at my tracks. The dog ahead also stopped, and even began to groan.

“The smell of blood,” muttered Gi Za.

I quietly nodded in affirmation.

My eyes swam around, searching for any hints of presence. The smell must have been brought by the wind blowing from ahead.

Which would mean… We caught up?

“Gi Da, take your subordinates, and see what’s ahead.”

The spear-specialist Gi Da, who I had left the position of the vanguard to, slowly nodded his head, then he moved ahead. Although he was paying careful attention to his surroundings, he moved surprisingly fast.

“King, it’s the corpse of an orc.”

I neared the corpse while keeping my guard up. So this is the source of the smell?

Looking at it carefully, I see there are scars all over the body. It’s not hard to realize that this orc exhausted all of his strength here.

“So he exhausted himself here, huh?” I muttered to myself.

I ordered Gi da and his men to deal with the corpse.

“…They’re close. Can we catch up to them in a day?” asked the druid chief, Gi Za, as he took a peep at the corpse.

“If possible I wish to do just that. But…”

If they were running to just one direction, then it would be fine. But I have to also consider the possibility of them lying in wait to ambush us. I can’t let my guard down.

The fact that they left behind a corpse means that they’re being driven into a corner. They didn’t have the luxury to hide the corpse.

Or is it a trap? A trap to weaken our noses?

I thought of that possibility as well, but I shook my head. No, there’s no one left to lead the orcs, right? If there was, then I wouldn’t have been left alone while I was on the verge of death.

There’s nothing to fear.

We’ll continue like this, and pursue the orcs.

◆◇◇

Because they have been walking throughout the night, fatigue could now be seen amongst the goblins.

But their efforts were appropriately rewarded. The stealthy Gi Ji had finally caught up to the orc horde.

Right now, we are rendezvousing with Gi Ji, and will rest in the forest as we observe the orcs.

The orc horde currently number 20.

It’s a lot bigger than what I had expected, but they are clearly exhausted. We continued to observe the orcs while being wary of the wind’s direction.

“That orc has been controlling the orc since a while ago,” said Gi Ji as he pointed his fingers.

On the other end of the direction he was pointing at was an orc that was a size smaller than the others.

“A… child?” I asked.

After thinking for a while, Gi Ji shook his head.

“No, it shouldn’t be that young. But that orc’s definitely responsible for keeping the horde together.”

The fastest way to win a fight between hordes is to finish off the head.

As I narrowed my eyes, I took a peek at the orc horde again. There, I saw a bigger orc push away the smaller orc.

“They seem to be having some internal disputes,” I commented.
“Yes. It’s been like that for some time now,” responded Gi Ji.

It must be dissatisfaction from being ordered around by someone with a physique clearly weaker than theirs. And right after suffering a defeat too.

“Tell me about the orc horde that split off from this one.”
“Yes.”

While I listened to Gi Ji’s report, the orcs continued to fight.

Apparently, the horde that split off from this horde separated after fighting with the smaller orc.

The one leading this horde is that smaller orc. It seems to want to completely retreat. Chances are it probably wants to retreat back home as soon as possible. And since it actually brought the weakened orcs with it, it doesn’t seem to be tainted by the law of the jungle.

In other words, it’s an intellectual. Or at the very least, it’s smarter than the bigger orc that pointlessly pushed it.

From my fight with Gol Gol, I know that orcs can more or less talk.

Up till now we haven’t shared any conversations aside from with our Overpowering Howls, but if there are also intellectuals amongst them, then it should be possible to negotiate. If anything, it would mean that there’s no need to completely exterminate the orcs. There’s no reason to fuss over a few pebbles on my way to become the Goblin King after all.

The restoration of the village is also halfway done. I don’t want to needlessly expose the goblins to danger.

“You will lose her, you know?”

Altesia’s words echoed within my mind.

The human threat coming from the east. Rather than destroying the orcs, the danger lies in the east. I need to use everything I have in order to strengthen my weak pieces.

As I was caught up within my thoughts, I saw the bigger orcs take five with it as they separated from the horde.

“What shall we do?” asked Gi Ji.
“Attack, of course,” I curtly replied.

The corners of my mouth naturally rose up, forming a smile. If there is any question… that would be: which to attack first.

◇◆◆

“Master Bui…”

As the gazes of my wounded brethren fell on me, I raised my fallen gaze up.

“Master Goi and the others have…”

Their voices were all shaken up. In order to soothe their panic, I clearly replied.

“I had them fight the goblins as a separate horde.”

It’s clearly a lie, but even then, I mustn’t show any weakness.

I couldn’t throw my wounded brethren away, and we spent so much time gathering our comrades. I don’t think I made the wrong choice, but even then, I can’t help but fear. It’s almost as if the goblins chased after us right after we left.

I ran away from the goblin village after the death of Master Gol Gol with my wounded brethren in tow because I was scared.

That Goblin King.

Even though he had a small body like mine, the aura surrounding his body was completely different.

It was scary. Using a flame-clad great sword, a mere goblin actually exchanged blows with Master Go Gol… and won.

A heaven-earth revolving event or a bolt from the blues… I don’t know. I don’t know what I should call it, but anyway, it was a shock.

“Let’s rest a bit,” I said.

Right.

We should have also inflicted plenty of damage against the goblins. They shouldn’t be able to chase after us right away.

So it should be fine if we just rest here for a bit, and let everyone recover their strength.

“Alright,” responded the others.

Seeing my brethren nod their head, I sat myself as well.

My sword and spear are unusually heavy.

It seemed like I could drop it at any time, so I left it on the ground.

Master Gol Gol who appointed young and little me is no longer here.

Goi, Gui and the others are all my seniors, so they refused to listen to my orders, and acted on their own.

I know. I know that it’s because I’m not strong enough.

I don’t have the power to make them give in, that’s why they left.

Even the orcs here too. The only reason they’re following my orders is because Master Gol Gol’s influence is still lingering.

I want power.

At the very least, something like that of the Goblin King’s.

Suddenly, I heard a voice scream from the forest.

My nose moved, and the smell of blood wafted to my nose. It’s the blood of my brethren! The distance is… no way. Why are there so many goblins nearby!? And these many too!?

“Everyone, stand up!”

Flustered, I quickly wielded my shield and sword. But as I was about to set a route, I was shocked.

Why are there goblins in front of us!?

As I was thinking that, another scream bellowed out from behind.

“Goblin…!”

They should have been a species weaker than us. But right now… what stood in front was a goblin with tawny skin, a black mane fluttering over its three horns, a vicious face, and a physique that was incomparable to us… it’s him!

The Goblin King who killed Master Gol Gol! He’s chased after us!

“M-Master Bui”

Someone called out to me.

With my legs shaking, I walked toward the king of the goblins. His face was broadly grinning. It was vicious.

Scary! Scary! Scary!!

The subordinates behind the Goblin King threw something.

“Goi!?”

Goi and the others who separated from the horde before had been dismembered and thrown at our feet.

“GURUuuuAAaA!”

The howl of the goblins bellowed, sending chills up our backs, causing our feet to vigorously shake.

Scary! Scary! Scary!

This is even scarier than when there was a giant spider!!

“Orcs!”

The Goblin King’s voice echoed.

It’s as if his great voice was shaking even the very piths of my stomach! Scary!

“I will give you a chance!”

As I stood there in front of my brethren, I heard voices scream out from behind me again.

Swallowed by the fear, and from a quick look at the surrounding area, I knew… We were already completely surrounded by the goblins.

“Fall under my lead! If you refuse, then you shall all die here!”

We’ll be eaten!

Scary! Scary! Scary!!

“A, Ahh…”

I couldn’t talk straight.

“G-Give m-me time to t-talk with my b-brethren.”

For a moment, I thought I felt the goblin’s golden pupils flash.

“No! If you are the chief, then you must decide!”

It’s impossible!

Unlike Master Gol Gol, I don’t have the power to convince my brethren. The only reason I was able to bring everyone here is because of Master Gol Gol’s influence.

For someone like me to…

“T-That’s…”
“Master Bui…”

I turned my head to that shriek, and there, I saw my brethren all looking at me.

That gaze of theirs that seemed to cling to me made me want to cry.

I can’t answer to your expectations! I’m small. I’m weak. I’m a crybaby.

That’s why… That’s why this is the only choice I can make!

“Oh?”

From the Goblin King’s subordinate, I heard a voice that seemed to both be shocked and admiring.

“… We will surrender, Goblin King.”
“I accept, Orc King.”

Wrong. I’m not the Orc King. That’s a title only Master Gol Gol has.

Someone like me is… Someone like me could never become a king.

But even as I thought that, I shook my head to the Goblin King’s words.

Orc King…

Like this… we became subordinated to the goblins.

◆◆◇◇◆◆◇◇

Orc King Bui (Lv34) has been subordinated.

◆◆◇◇◆◆◇◇

Author’s Note: So they were able to take control of an orc tribe.

I came to like Bui as I was writing the chapter.

TL Note: Not sure what was going on in this chapter. Either author mistake, or he changed something, but he didn’t seem to say anything in the author’s notes, so maybe it really is a mistake. I don’t know.

In any case, one, he wrote Paruza instead of Baruza… but I’m going to go ahead and assume that a typo. So I kept it as Baruza for you guys.

Second, there’s the skin color which was written as grey in the other chapter, but now it’s brown. The only other translation is ashen for the previous chapter’s, so… Yeah, maybe author mistake or it was changed. But I don’t see any change notes anywhere. Or maybe protag just doesn’t know the difference between brown and grey… haha. I don’t know.

The Man Picked up by the Gods – Volume 4 Chapter 1: Reunion 1

TL Note: Please note that this chapter was split by the author himself.

This is also the extra chapter for the week, so a huge thanks to all the donors for making this chapter possible.

It’s already been three years since Ryouma parted with the duke’s family at Gimuru, and approximately two years since Ryouma retrieved his inheritance.

It was on the morning of such a day, that a carriage departed from the gates of the town of Kereban that was a few days’ distance from Gimuru. Within the carriage were the figures of six people. One was an old man who worked as the coachman, while the other five were young girls of marriageable age.

The coachman was the butler of the Jamil Household, Sebasu. And the ones inside the carriage were the daughter of the Jamil Household, Elialia Jamil and her friend and classmate, Miyabi Saionji. Also within the carriage were the eldest daughter of a count, Michelle Willdan, the knight and eldest daughter of a baron, Riera Clifford, and the magic tool craftsman apprentice, Kanan Shuza.

Dressed in inconspicuous clothing, these five young girls have left the capital, and have been travelling with Sebasu-san on a carefree trip.

“It won’t be long till the city of Gimuru.” [Elia]
“Right~” [Miyabi]
“If everything goes well, we’ll be there within 2 days.” [Michelle]
“I’m looking forward to seeing the matches being held at the arena.” [Riera]
“As for me, I’m most interested in Elia and Miyabi’s friend.” [Kanan]

These five young girls made use of the academy’s extended leave to go on a trip. And are now happily talking about the things they are looking forward to in Gimuru. The reason behind choosing their destination as Gimuru is partly because of Elia’s promised reunion with Ryouma. However, that’s not the only reason they’re going to Gimuru.

In the past two years, thanks to the all the efforts of Gimuru’s hired earth magicians and workers, Gimuru was able to complete the new town to the south where the arena is, making the place much more lively than what it used to be. They, especially Riera who aims to be a knight, hope to see the matches of the many adventurers and people that take pride in their skills.

Although this trip might be a carefree one, as three of the young girls are daughters of nobles, they are being accompanied by the head butler of the Jamil Household, Sebasu, who acts both as their coachman and bodyguard. Of course, the young girls’ parents had all given them their approval to go on this trip too.

Some time later as the carriage continued to proceed toward their destination, Elia looked out the window. As she gazed at the scenery outside, she muttered, saying

“I’ve heard rumors of bandits attacking while on the road, but I can’t feel even an inkling of such presence.” [Elia]
“Gimuru has gotten popular lately, causing the tourists and merchants to increase. Because of that the number of bandits have also increased. However, Gimuru isn’t one to take that lying down. In order to deal with them, Gimuru put up requests against the bandits with relatively high compensation. As soon as the rumors circulate, the adventurers gather, and the bandits are dealt with. But in the unlikely situation that we do happen upon some, please rest assured, I will be here to protect you young ladies.” [Sebasu]

A first-class magician such as Sebasu could easily deal with bandits while protecting five people. And even if the carriage were to be ruined, Sebasu could still run away with the group in tow with his dimension magic.

“Moreover, the path we’re taking is safer than the other paths. There should be little chance of bandits appearing here.” [Sebasu]

As he said that, he took the reins of the horse, guiding it toward one of the many roads leading to Gimuru. The path the carriage was headed for was the path that crossed over a mountain.

“Sebasu-dono, why is this path safe?” [Riera]

Having been born to a family that has served as knights for many generations, Riera possessed a wealth of knowledge when it came to dealing with bandits. It should have been common sense that bandits preferred the mountain roads, where they could lie in wait at an opportune place for some unknowing prey. She could not understand why Sebasu would judge the road they were taking to be safe.

At Riera’s question, even the other four couldn’t help but pay attention to Sebasu.

“This is something I happened to overhear at Kereban, but apparently, there’s an adventurer that‘s been frequenting this road lately. He goes around subjugating the bandits even without receiving a prior request. Moreover, he makes sure to deal with all of the bandits, not leaving even a single one untouched. Such actions have apparently stricken fear into the hearts of the bandits, causing most of  them to stay clear of this road.” [Sebasu]

When the five girls heard that, they were able to understand. Afterwards, they began to talk amongst themselves again. As they did, Sebasu happily watched over them as he drove the carriage.

As their carriage continued through the mountainous road, they passed through other carriages, and even the travelers that were resting by the road. When noon came, the girls had to stop their carriage as well in order to rest and have lunch.. As they ate, they talked about the people passing by.

“This road sure has a lot of people passing through it, huh?” [Kanan]
“I know right? They’re probably gatherin’ here caused they heard that the road’s safe.” [Miyabi]
“Because of that rumor?” [Kanan]
“Most likely. Besides, with this many people passing through here, it won’t be so easy for the bandits to attack either. Well… being safe is nice and all, but I’m a bit worried about the lodging once we get to the next town.” [Michelle]
“The next town’s not that big either too. It’d probably be better if we hurry, huh?” [Riera]
“I don’t think hurrying now would make a difference though.” [Michelle]

They ate like that as they talked amongst themselves. When they finished eating, they began to move again. And fortunately, they were able to make it to the town, before the sun had set.

This town is called Mek. It’s mostly just a stopover town for people to rest while on their way to Gimuru. And as it’s only a day’s distance from Kereban, a lot of people heading to Gimuru drop by.

It was on this town that a problem appeared.

“My deepest apologies, but there are no longer any free rooms…” [Clerk]
“I see…” [Elia]

The six left the inn that refused them. Just as they had feared, they weren’t able to get an inn.

This village is an inn town, so there’re many inns in it. But at the same time, there are also a lot of people heading for Gimuru. Moreover, that already overwhelming number was further increased because of the rumor that’s been circulating. There are some new inns being built, to allow the town to accommodate more people, but unfortunately, they aren’t done yet. As a result, the town’s inns are being constantly filled with people.

If the three daughters of noble lineage were to announce their presence, it would be possible to forcibly take some rooms, but their personal values wouldn’t let them do that. Because of that, they had no choice but to go around to look for an inn. In the end, they were refused, and they finally had no choice but to sleep inside Sebasu’s Dimension Home.

Because they gave up on staying at an inn, the girls weren’t able to experience one of the joys of travelling which was to stay at the inn of the land they are visiting. So instead, they went around to see the gorgeously decorated lively town, window-shopped at a souvenir store, and when they’d whetted their appetite enough, they went to eat supper.

“Does this town have any specialty?” [Kanan]
“There seems to be a lot of delicious restaurants.” [Michelle]
“But because there’s plenty of delicious restaurants, it becomes a dilemma which one to go to.” [Elia]
“Then in that case, I’ll go and ask.” [Kanan]

As Kanan said that, she went to a nearby shop’s clerk, and she began her inquiries. She came back after a while.

“I got some info~. There’s a bar near the west gate of this town called “Woodsman.” There’s also a restaurant with delicious cooking at the east gate at a restaurant called “Tereshi Diner”. And then if we want to eat a variety of foods, the clerk said to go to the northern part of the town as there’re many carts gathered there.” [Kanan]
“Regardless how delicious the cooking may be, it’d be better not to go to the bar.” [Miyabi]
“It’ll be a pain if we get caught up with some weird guy after all.” [Michelle]
“So that leaves the carts or Tereshi Diner.” [Riera]

There, Elia asked Kanan this.

“I wonder what kind of food the cars serve.” [Elia]
“Ah~…… It’s because Elia’s a lady after all.” [Kanan]

As Kanan said that, Riera began explaining.

“They generally have a lot of food on stick. There’re also plenty of soups and drinks. And then, there’re also places that properly serve food. And even if the disdh is the same, the taste can change depending on the store. A good cart can provide really delicious food.” [Riera]
“Oh? Riera, have you gone to carts before?” [Elia]
“I don’t go that much, but before I enrolled into the academy, my dad sometimes took me. Dad says it’s convenient to eat at those sort of places because it makes it possible for him to have an honest conversation with his subordinates, so because of that, he frequents the food carts.” [Riera]
“So that’s how it its.” [Elia]
“Since Elia doesn’t seem to have any experience with the food carts, how about we eat there?” [Michelle]
“If everyone’s alright with it, then please.” [Elia]
“I’m fine with it! It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to eat from a food cart.” [Kanan]
“I’m alright with the food carts too, but I don’t think that’ll be enough to have our fill.” [Miyabi]
“Then in that case, we can go there to taste some food from the carts. Then if that’s not enough, we can just go eat at a proper restaurant.” [Riera]
“Perfect! As long as we pay attention to the amount we order, there should be no problem.” [Elia]

Like this, the girls headed for the northern part of the town where the carts were gathered.

With Kanan in the lead, the girls headed for the area where the carts were gathered. When they got there, they were greeted by a large, rectangular plaza that ran along the town’s outer walls.

The plaza of the town can be entered through the side road from the main street. Meeting the people entering from the side road are the over 40 carts lined up. There are many customers going around between the carts and the side street. With the hustling and bustling and enthusiasm all together the atmosphere area was like that of a festival’s.

“There are so many people.” [Elia]
“I haven’t gone to food carts all that much with my dad, but from what I’ve heard, one of the joys of eating at food carts is finding a delicious one amongst all the rabble. With this many carts, there’s bound to be one that’s delicious.” [Riera]
“Let’s go and find a delicious place ta eat at already.” [Miyabi]

At Miyabi’s words, the five of them went to take a look at the food in the carts. Meanwhile, Sebasu nonchalantly made sure that there were no suspicious people around them.

When they found something that caught their eye, the five of them went along with Sebasu-san toward that cart. At first, Elia couldn’t calm down as she impatiently carried the skewered meat to her mouth, but after a while, she finally showed signs of getting used to it.

When everyone had their fill, Michelle said this.

“Hmm… I think I’ll finish after one or two more. As expected, we won’t be able to go see all the carts.” [Michelle]
“I think I’ll do the same.” [Miyabi]
“Right… then what should we eat? We’ve already eaten all sorts of skewered food, so…” [Elia]
“I’d like to eat something that fills me up more.” [Kanan]
“Then in that case, how about that cart over there?” [Sebasu]

As Sebasu said that, he pointed toward a cart with a long queue waiting on it. As the cart was hidden by the crowd of people, the six of them couldn’t see the cart. However, there was a sign that was raised up high where the food being sold was written.

“Slime Den Restaurant, special meat buns?” [Michelle]
“From the town of Gimuru… I think that might be…” [Elia]
“Yes. It’s the name of Ryouma-sama’s store.” [Sebasu]
“By Ryouma, you mean Elia’s friend, right?” [Riera]
“Yes. Some time ago he mentioned in his letter that he had employed someone whom he turned into a head chef and opened a store with… But I didn’t know that it was a cart.” [Elia]
“Don’t you think the store’s name might just be an imitation?” [Kanan]

The possibility that Kanan mentioned does exist, but Sebasu promptly denied it.

“That’s genuine. It’s most likely Ryouma-sama’s cart. I also haven’t heard anything about Ryouma-sama’s cart, but he probably came here to spread word about his store.” [Sebasu]

The papers for a cart can easily be done. Moreover, finding a place for one won’t be hard either. Because of that, it’s not strange to have just one or two cooks operating one. Moreover, by spreading word of his own store to all these people heading that are heading toward Gimuru, the possibility that a lot of people might come to his store shouldn’t be hard to imagine.

Hearing that, the five understood. In that case, the next problem would be the taste.

“I’ve never heard of that meat bun dish he’s talking about. What kind of cooking is it?” [Elia]
“It’s seasoned grilled meat mixed with all sorts of ingredients and then packed in a bread. However, the bread used is completely different from a normal bread. The bread used is made not by frying, but by steaming, so it’s extremely soft. And with the juice of the meat permeating into the bread, the taste of the ingredients become superb. I’ve had the pleasure of eating it once, and I have to say, it was absolutely delicious.” [Sebasu]

When Sebasu answered Riera’s question, everyone suddenly became interested in the meat buns.

“It kind of sounds delicious.” [Kanan]
“Shall we go try it? We’ll be meeting him later, so it’ll also serve as a good topic for conversation.” [Riera]
“Still, the line’s pretty darn long…” [Miyabi]
“Moreover, there also seems to be a limit on how much one can buy.” [Michelle]

On the store’s sign was pasted: only two per person. This is to spread the store’s meat buns to everyone, please cooperate.

“Just two, huh? Then I guess I’ll go buy some dessert somewhere. Can you guys buy my portion too? Of course, I’ll buy dessert for everyone.” [Michelle]
“I’ll lend ya a helping hand. Carryin’ six people’s worth of food’s bound to be a handful, right?” [Miyabi]
“Then in that case, I’ll come along too. Riera-sama, please take care of our family’s young lady.” [Sebasu]
“Leave it to me.” [Riera]

Like this, Michelle, Miyabi, and Sebasu left to buy dessert. The ones left in that place were Riera, Elialia, and Kanan. They were lined up at the end of the queue.

Riera felt something amiss when Sebasu chose to leave Elia, whoe he was supposed to protect the most, but her thoughts were interrupted when the other two called out to her.

“What’s the matter, Riera?” [Elia]
“Keep going. The queue’s unexpectedly fast, so if you stop, we’ll become a bother.” [Kanan]
“A, Ah… Right.” [Riera]

What Riera was pondering about was actually what would happen if a situation where she can’t handle occurs. But changing her way of thinking, Riera followed the line. Just as Kanan had mentioned, the line was actually quite fast. At this rate, it shouldn’t be long before it becomes their turn.

The three waited for a while, then their turn finally came. The cart was being operated by two black-haired men who cooked the food and served the customers. The two had the exdact same face and appearance, so they were clearly twins. With Riera in the lead, the three of them closed in to the clerk. The clerk called out to them.

“Welcome!” [Clerk]
“Six meat buns. There’s three of us.” [Riera]

Said Riera as she ordered the meat buns. But as the clerk was about to respond, the clerk suddenly stopped mid-speech.

“Unders––––“ [Clerk]

Before Riera, who became wary of the clerk, could say something, the clerk muttered.

“––––––––Elia?” [Clerk]

When the three heard that, they were more or less surprised, but the one surprised the most was the one whose name was called, Elia. When Elia took a peek at the clerk who called her name, she felt that it was a face she had seen before.

As she tried to recall, she spoke the name of the person that came up in her thoughts.

“Ryouma-san?” [Elia]
“So it really is Elia! It’s been a while!” [Ryouma]

Elia nodded her head to confirm the clerk’s, Ryouma’s, words. And then she smiled.

These two have been keeping in touch with each other through their letters, but letters aren’t able to show one another their appearances. Moreover, they were both going through a period of growing up, so after not having met for three years, they had grown up, and weren’t able to recognize each other with just a glance.

The both of them were taller compared to three years ago. Elia had grown to around 160cm, while Ryouma was half a head taller. And more than anything, Elia’s body was become much more rounded like a woman’s, while Ryouma wasn’t fat by any means, he was body is built with muscles. It can’t be helped that neither of them were able to recognize each other.

Although they were surprised at the sudden reunion, Ryouma and Elia began talking to each other while her friends were left dumbfounded at the realization that the rumored friend was actually the man before them. But then a man’s voice sounded out from behind them.

“Hey, hurry up––“ [Man]
“Ah, yes!” [Ryouma]
We can’t talk here, huh?” [Elia]

As Ryouma filled the paper bag with meat buns, he asked Elia.

“Elia, where are you staying at today?” [Ryouma]
“Actually, we couldn’t find an inn because of all the people. So we’ll be staying at Sebasu’s Dimension Home instead.” [Elia]
“Oh… I’m going to close soon, so if you don’t mind, how about we meet later?” [Ryouma]
“Yes, let’s. But where…” [Elia]
“Let’s meet at the Tereshi Diner to the east of this town. That restaurant’s being run by a pair of now married, former adventurers, so it’s safe.” [Ryouma]
“Alright. I’ll see you then.” [Elia]
“Thank you for your patronage. Next customer!” [Ryouma]

After finishing their quick exchange, Elia and her friends left Ryouma’s cart. And just as they left, Michelle and the others who had gone to buy desserts arrived. Elia and the others explained to them what had just happened at the cart.

After eating the meat buns and the desserts, the six of them all gathered at the Tereshi Diner to meet with Ryouma. Speaking of which, the meat buns were a huge success.

The Man Picked up by the Gods – Idle Talk 2

Ryouma left the Great Forest of Shurus, and went back to Gimuru. Upon arrival, he spent most of his time studying and researching the inheritance he received from his grandmother. There, a life of rest and games with his magical beasts began.

At a day like that, the gods opened a feast in the divine realm with Ryouma.

“More wine! Don’t hold back! Just drink and drink!” [Tekun]
“Tekun, aren’t you drinking too much?” [Rurutia]
“Isn’t it fine? I won’t get drunk. Instead, why don’t you tell that to Gayn?” [Tekun]
“Mn~? I’m not drunk, you know~?” [Gayn]
“You are!” [Tekun & Rurutia]
“He is drunk, right?” [Rurutia]
“He’s drunk… completely. Ryouma’s cooking and snacks are delicious, so we’ve been drinking nonstop~. But really… this liquor here is the sacred wine, so drinking lots probably can’t be helped… It’s great that the cooking matches it though. Ah, do you have any more of this Japanese-style Hamburger?” [Tekun]
“There is. The meat was cheap, so I bought lots and made lots. Please feel free to eat as much as you want.” [Ryouma]

This feast is something that became common practice after Ryouma received the treatment for the demon king’s influence and around the time when Ryouma started receiving pointes from Tekun on how to make his staff.

At the start, Ryouma was wondering whether or not he could find a way to thank Gayn, Tekun, and co. for helping him out, so he filled the magic tool box that he got from his grandparents with cooking, and then entered the divine realm.

But before the food comes wine. And when there’s food and wine, then it’s a feast. Said the God of Wine, Tekun, who was also naturally a wine aficionado. It only took him a moment to prepare the liquor and the place.

As Rurutia enjoyed the sweets back in Earth, it could be seen that the taste of the gods and the humans aren’t that much different. Because of that even the gods that were lacking in pleasure enjoyed the feast. And since the gods seemed to be happy, Ryouma brought food again the next time he came. And again, and again… That repetition continued for some time until it finally became common practice amongst them.

The gods that took part in the feast were generally the four gods, Gain, Kufo, Rurutia, and Tekun, along with Ryouma. But after holding the feast a few more times, other gods started participating as well. For example, the God of War from before joined. And even the God of Magic. After that, even the husband and wife, the God of Farming and the God of the Land, joined.

At the start, Ryouma was at a loss when the gods he knew started to increase. But lately he’s gotten used to it.

And today, a god Ryouma hadn’t met yet, showed up.

“Hey.” [Tekun]
“Oh my.” [Rurutia]
“Why are you here?” [Kufo]
“Well, that’s unusual.” [Gayn]

Muttered the gods as the they looked behind Ryouma. A moment later, Ryouma turned around. What entered his vision was the face of a young girl. Their eyes met.

“Eh!?” [Ryouma]

When Ryouma noticed that the girl was point-blank him, he took a step back, but the girl only continued to stare at Ryouma without saying a word.

When Ryouma had taken some distance, he saw the full body of the girl standing there in front of him. Ryouma thought the girl to be cute, but emotionless. The girl almost seemed robot-like with that deadpan face of hers.

The girl looked to be below 10. Her straight, silver hair extended past her waist all the way to her knees. Clad in a dress black as the dead of the night, the girl released a mysterious, overwhelming pressure. Ryouma and the girl continued to look each other in the eye wordlessly.

“If this keeps up, we’ll end up wasting time. Ryouma-kun, that child’s name is Meltrize. She is a god just like us.” [Gayn]
“Pretty rare, eh? For you to show up.” [Tekun]
“I was interested.” [Meltrize]

The little girl responded to Tekun’s inquiry with only a few words as she continued to stare at Ryouma. Ryouma was bewildered at the girl’s behavior, but he decided to introduce himself anyway.

“Greetings, my name is Ryouma Takebayashi.” [Ryouma]
“I know who you are.” [Meltrize]

Said Meltrize with an expressionless face.

“My name is Meltrize. I am the God of Death and Sleep. It’s a pleasure.” [Meltrize]
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Meltrize-sama.” [Ryouma]
“Meltrize is fine. Rather than that, I want to hear you sing.” [Meltrize]
“…Sing?” [Ryouma]

While Ryouma was surprised by the sudden request, Tekun stood up.

“Oh? Missy, you wanted to hear a song? If that’s the case, then I can sing enka–.“ [Tekun]
“No need.” [Meltrize]
“Ok…” [Tekun]

Tekun’s proposal was flatly rejected, so he had no choice but to dejectedly sit back down. Tekun came to like Earth’s enka, so he started enjoying singing it during the banquet.

“What I want to hear is the song that you sing during the night.” [Meltrize]

Hearing that, Ryouma finally understood what it was that Meltrize wanted to hear. But at the same time, he was troubled.

“Could it be you’re referring to the Cursed Song?” [Ryouma]
“Right.” [Meltrize]
“That song’s a bit…” [Ryouma]

When Ryouma got back to Gimuru, he sometimes practiced the song in the abandoned mine. But despite that, he wasn’t able to control the Cursed Song once.

“There’s no need to worry. We’re all gods here. Your magic won’t harm us.” [Meltrize]
“Then in that case…” [Ryouma]

With those words, Ryouma’s fears were swept away. He took out his guitar from the Item Box, and he began to sing.

“Then… One song.” [Ryouma]
“Sing, sing!” [Tekun]
“Hyu! Hyu!” [Kufo]

While Tekun and Kufo were egging Ryouma on, Ryouma sang the Cursed Song. They were still having a banquet, so Ryouma chose a quiet, but warm song. The effect was lessened, but it’s not like the Cursed Song can’t be used unless the song’s depressing.

And just as one would expect, even Tekun and Kufo kept quiet when the song began. They all quietly enjoyed Ryouma’s performance.

When Ryouma finished singing, the gods broke out in an applause. All but Meltrize who only approached Ryouma.

“Was my performance able to satisfy the young miss?” [Ryouma]

As Ryouma jokingly asked that as if he were a gentleman, a sinister and vigorous black smoke erupted from Meltrize’s, which wrapped itself around Ryouma.

“What are you–!?” [Ryouma]

Just as Ryouma thought he had offended the god, a black smoke appeared, and Ryouma began to struggle. But then, Rurutia’s voice reached his ears.

“It’s alright, Ryouma-kun! She is only giving you her divine protection; it won’t hurt you!” [Rurutia]
“Divine protection!?” [Ryouma]

Hearing that, Ryouma finally noticed that neither the black smoke nor Meltrize held any ill will. Ryouma has the divine protection of Kufo, so he should be able to tell whether Meltrize wishes to harm him or not.

“But… divine protection? I’m grateful, but why me again?” [Ryouma]

Ryouma’s question was answered by Tekun.

“There doesn’t have to be a reason for us to give a divine protection, you know? She pretty much just came to like you, so she’s give you her divine protection. It’s the same even for the slimes. If I like one, I’ll give it my divine protection.” [Tekun]
“But you actually did give my drunk slime your divine protection.” [Ryouma]
“I thought it was pretty strange seeing a slime who actually enjoyed to drink, but when I saw it evolve, and saw it become able to make alcohol. I thought, well isn’t this amusing? That little girl over there is the same. She’s giving you her divine protection because she likes your song.” [Tekun]

Hearing that, Ryouma looked at Meltrize. When he did, Meltrize nodded wordlessly, then she began explaining.

“That song… I don’t hate it. The sound is filled with magic power and is relaxing.” [Meltrize]

Ryouma didn’t know whether the song being relaxing had anything to do with the sound being filled with magic power. Meltrize realized Ryouma’s confusion, so she tried explaining.

“…I am the god of sleep and death, so I feel most at home at places where there’s plenty of dark attribute magic power. Your Cursed Song spreads dark magic power in the area. And the area affected by that magic power is comfortable to me. There are many people better than you when it comes to playing the guitar and singing, but there’s no one else who can sing a song as comfortable as you.” [Meltrize]
“So that’s how it is…” [Ryouma]

Ryouma wasn’t able to understand to what extent it was pleasurable, but he did understand what Meltrize was trying to say.

After that, Meltrize joined the banquet. As she ate, she began to teach Ryouma the details of the divine protection of the death god.

“My divine protection will make the usage of dark attribute magic power somewhat easier. So as long as you put in the effort, you should be able to control the Cursed Song. Also, although it’s really just a little bit, but you should also gain resistance against curses and dark magic.” [Meltrize]

Hearing that, Ryouma, who had little resistance toward curses, was elated. So he figured he could at least bring out more food, and sing as a form of appreciation.

And this is going somewhat off topic, but this is Meltrize’s first time joining the banquet, so he didn’t know what she liked. To remedy that, Ryouma had everyone taste all the food in the banquet, and he found out that Meltrize enjoyed food like pepperoncino which had strong sharp taste.

He also found out that contrary to her appearance, Meltrize actually liked to drink.

It was in this way that Ryouma enjoyed his time with the gods. Until finally, the time for the banquet to end came.

“Oops, guess it’s time.” [Tekun]

Said Tekun as he looked at Ryouma. A bead of light had already began to shine around Ryouma due to the time limit being reached. As this is something that everyone had already gotten used to, it’s now being used as a sign to end the banquet.

From there on, Ryouma began to quickly clean everything up as he put everything back into his box.

“Then… next time again.” [Ryouma]
“The next one’s two weeks from now.” [Rurutia]
“You’ve already managed to do the basics of making a staff, so next time, depending on your progress, I’ll teach you the next step.” [Tekun]
“Don’t push yourself too much~” [Gayn]
“Let’s meet again.” [Meltrize]
“It’s hard, but do your best.” [Kufo]

Like this, the banquet for the day ended, and Ryouma left the divine realm.

After Ryouma had left the divine realm, a heavy atmosphere unlike that of a while ago filled the presence of the gods. Even Gayn who was acting a little drunk just a moment ago was suddenly sober. Amongst that group of gods, the one who spoke was Kufo.

“Well then… I guess the break’s over.” [Kufo]
“Right. It’s going to become busy again… But it’s still good since he Ryouma found that thing while it was still in that stage.” [Rurutia]
“True… It’s embarrassing as a god, but not one of us was able to notice the fragment left behind by the demon king. We would have probably fallen behind if Ryouma hadn’t found it, so our work’s actually been reduced a lot as we’re able to deal with it before it turned into a disaster.” [Tekun]
“It’s been such a long time since we were this busy… I hate this sort of busyness.” [Rurutia]
“That’s because there’s nothing fun about working ourselves to the bone looking for the hidden fragments of the demon king.” [Gayn]

The other gods nodded to Gayn’s words, showing their agreement. Ever since Ryouma found the magic gem that housed the fragment of the demon king, the world of the gods has been buzzing in busyness.

Even if it is true that the demon king’s fragment that Ryouma found was well hidden, it still doesn’t change the fact that the ones responsible for governing this world are the gods. Which means to say that the gods were negligent. So it’s only a given that they would start working to find a solution as soon as they found out about the matter.

If it were a human they were dealing with, they would have been able to settle the issue immediately. But the opponent right now is a demon king. Although rotten, it’s still a former god. Finding the fragment is difficult even with the power of god. It takes a lot of time and effort to find, making the work a chore. The gods’ bodies may not be capable of breaking apart, but they do still accumulate stress and fatigue. So in order to restore their energies, they have a banquet whenever Ryouma comes.

However, they did not explain to Ryouma about that part. All they said was, “We’re trying to see if there’re any more fragments,” keeping any information under wraps. And because Gayn and the others were too busy except during the banquet, they decided to exchange information after the banquet before going back home.

“Speaking of which, what’s going to happen to Ryouma? You’ve been letting him drink some of the god’s wine that’s been diluted with normal wine, right?” [Tekun]
“The influence of the demon king sometimes comes out, but I don’t think it’ll get any worse than this. As for the sacred wine, he’s only drinking enough to contain the strength of the demon king, so there shouldn’t be any other effects.” [Gayn]
“With the sacred wine as treatment, we should be able to keep most of the harm to Ryouma in check, right?” [Rurutia]
“Well, he has gotten better, right? Besides, it’s better than completely sealing it up. If we were to completely seal it up, then Ryouma’s soul would also have to be sealed… That would be putting the cart before the horse.” [Gayn]
“Even a moment of sealing would cause a person to become crippled after all.” [Rurutia]

Hearing that, Meltrize, who had just met Ryouma today, was shocked. But with her unsociable expression and unchanging tone, that shock was by no means visible from the surface.

“Was that fragment that strong? I heard he hadn’t spent much time with the fragment.” [Meltrize]
“…A normal person wouldn’t be affected as much, but if it’s Ryouma we’re talking about, then the situation is a bit different. I talked to you about Ryouma’s previous life when I woke you up, right?” [Gayn]
“You did. It is visibly strange.” [Meltrize]
“Umu. I’ll leave it at that for now, but because of that world’s god pulling strings, Ryouma’s soul has become able to easily absorb the power of gods. We’ve managed to treat it for now, so it’s safe now, but the demon king’s power did begin to influence Ryouma’ soul. It will take some time before Ryouma fully recovers, but we can only call it fortunate that we didn’t find out before it was too late.” [Gayn]
“Also, Fer Noevir mentioned that he might have figured out a hint from that case regarding the abnormality of the recent otherworlders.” [Rurutia]

Tekun reacted to Rurutia’s words.

“What? I didn’t hear anything about that.” [Tekun]
“Oh? Maybe it’s because you went ahead that time? Well it’s a separate issue from the demon fragment, and there’s no proof either, so we probably forgot to inform you.” [Rurutia]
“So what did he say?” [Tekun]
“Isn’t that the reason why we were sometimes unable to predict the grow of the otherworlders that were sent to our world, is what he said.” [Rurutia]
“So the god from the other world is doing something to the people being sent here?” [Tekun]
“Well, it’s not impossible. We already know after all that that god has changed the destiny of many people already. It wouldn’t be strange if some of those people were to come to this world.” [Gayn]
“But why would he do that?” [Meltrize]

The gods fell into deep thought at Meltrize’s question. In the end, Gayn said this,

“I don’t know. The god from Earth is a level above us. Moreover, there’s no merit in him attacking other worlds as his own world is safe… There were some otherworlders that caused disasters, but there were also those that benefited our world. So I can’t think of his actions as an invasion.

Moreover, there were also people that lived ordinary lives until the end. I can’t think of any reason for him to be doing this on purpose. As of now, the most I can say is that it’s a coincidence.” [Gayn]

“And while there might be many gods who don’t interfere with gods of other worlds, there aren’t many who would willingly give the magic power of their world to another god’s. Because of that we can’t afford to pursue the matter, lest risk angering the god of earth, and losing a source of magic power for this world. Which would then greatly affect this world’s vitality…” [Rurutia]
“When that happens, the world might not be destroyed, but a lot of problems will certainly come up… Wait a moment, this.. and even that too! Isn’t everything the fault of that demon king!?” [Kufo]
“I can’t say everything, but it is true that this world was invaded, and that the magic power became easily exhaustible. If it weren’t for that demon king, we wouldn’t have had to borrow power from the god of earth. But saying that now won’t change anything. Right now, what we have to do is decide on how to solve the problem.” [Gayn]
“Then… should we start the operation now?” [Tekun]
“Umu. Let’s go look for the fragments of the demon king. As for me, I’ll go check up on the others that couldn’t come to me, and then I’ll go back to my own search.” [Gayn]

As Gayn said that, he vanished from that place.

“I’ll go back too.” [Meltrize]
“Don’t forget to contact me when you find a fragment. Also, come to the next banquet too, alright, missy?” [Tekun]
“Sure.” [Meltrize]
“How unusual. Not only did the sleepyhead Meltrize wake up, but she’s also actually going out do something.” [Kufo]
“Pepperoncini… was delicious. Also… I’m not a sleepyhead, I’m the god of sleep.” [Meltrize]
“You realize that in the mortal word’s time, you slept 500 years straight until you actually had to deal with this recent matter, right? Isn’t that plenty to qualify you as a sleepyhead?” [Kufo]
“…I’m going home.” [Meltrize]

As Meltrize said those words which, although her face remained expressionless and the tone normal, seemed to carry a hint of dissatisfaction, she vanished.

After that Kufo, Rurutia, Tekun, also disappeared one after another. And they all busied themselves, searching for the demon king’s fragments until the next time when Ryouma comes to visit again.

TL Note: Meltrize is pronounced mel-tree-ze. The ze is like the ze from zen. Also, extra chappie tomorrow.

[Abnormal Status] <<Charm of the Saint>>

Reflected on the surface of the mirror was a figure with gray skin, and golden eyes like those of a snake. The mane extending from the head to the back was black, and the body was slightly bigger than that of the duke class. The figure was just barely small enough to pass for a big human.

On the right arm was Pitch Black (Verid). The area he was coiled around was now a little bigger than before. As for the figure’s face, it hadn’t changed much. It had the same banality as that of the reptiles. Then from the head could be seen three horns growing. Two were wrenched, while the other reached for the sky. But what was most surprising was the tail that had now grown. When I tried touching my skin, I noticed that some body hair had grown.

I could move my tail at will. As for how it feels, it’s difficult to put to words. After all, it’s something I didn’t have as a human. If I were to give an illustration, it would be somewhat similar to having an extra leg by the tailbone.

I continued to swing my tail, trying to understand the sensation. It seems I’m not able to swing my tail as fiercly as the kobolds can.

Exactly where is my evolution headed, I wonder.

With my feelings renewed, I went over to the lake, and took a good look at my own reflection. Unfortunately, I could only tilt my head when I saw my reflected face.

If this is the hobby of that goddess, then I say… she has no taste.

My face had few wrinkles on it, and was even smooth like that of a human’s. But undoubtedly, it was still definitely a goblin. If you add the mane and the tail on top of that, then I’m no longer a goblin, but a beast.

It’s hard to come to terms with it.

Still… Reshia and the other goblins didn’t flinch when they saw this appearance.

If so, then this is undoubtedly me. If anything, I’m more surprised about their reactions.

Normally, when someone changes this much, you’d wonder who it is when you first see them.

Well… I did grow some body hair, so I guess it’s something to be happy about.

I’m a bit closer to mammals now instead of the previous reptiles.

Well then…

Let’s leave the discussion on this figure that I don’t want to see.

When I saw how fiendish my laughter was when reflected on the lake, for a moment, I thought my heart would stop.

I’m surprised the others can take this without batting an eyelid.

◇◆◇

When I got back to the village, I went back to the king’s house to receive the report, and fully understand the current state of the horde. At the same time, I also took the opportunity to see the status of the goblin rares.

Normally, I wouldn’t push myself, and just do it tomorrow. But unfortunately, there’s not much time left.

“The next goblin is a druid.”

The goblin that entered looked exactly like a human. It was a druid.

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 1
[Class] Druid
[Possessed Skills] <<Magic Manipulation>> <<Water Arts Manipulation>>
[Divine Protection] Water God (Iren)
[Attributes] Water

Come to think of it, this is the first time I’m seeing the status of a druid with the <<Red Snake’s Eye>>.

Hmm…?

So the [Class] isn’t rare, but druid?

So if they were to promote up a class, they’ll stop being druids.

I’ll be looking forward to Gi Za’s next evolution then. I might see a new kind of goblin.

“I name you Gi Zo.”
“Thank you, chief. I am most grateful.”

So he really can speak smoothly. It seems Gi Za isn’t an exception.

Gi Za might be a good successor to leave the village to.

If I were to leave everything to him right at the start, disputes might happen. So I should instead gather some trusted ones first to leave everything to, and have him gather experience
that way.

After I sent the goblin off, the old goblin’s voice came.

“Continuing… The next goblin is a student of the spear under Lord Gi Ga.”

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 1
[Class] Rare
[Possessed Skills] <<Spearmanship C->> <<Knowledge of the Spear>> <<Spear Throwing>> <<Overpowering Howl>> <<Unreasonably Stubborn>>
[Divine Protection] None
[Attributes] None

<<Knowledge of the Spear>> compensates for one’s spear technique, raising it up a level.

<<Unreasonably Stubborn>> allows one to move for a short moment after receiving enough damage to die.

As expected from Gi Ga’s faction, they are well-versed in the way of the spear. If I were to fight his men with only the spear, I probably won’t be able to win.

“I name you Gi Da.”
“Thank you.”

You really can’t expect goblin rare’s to be able to speak well.

Not that it’s inconvenient or anything.

The goblin enthralled by the Mad God was also promoted to the rare class. All these goblin rares being born from Gi Ga’s faction is undoubtedly a testament to the fierceness of the battle they were thrown into.

But at this rate, will his faction end up dissolving?

No, in fact, I should probably have it dissolve as soon as possible.

How about if I have him teach the newly born goblins and the injured ones?

It might be worth trying out.

“The next goblin is from Lord Gi Gu’s faction.”

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 1
[Class] Rare
[Possessed Skills] <<Overpowering Howl>> <<Swordsmanship C-> <<Wide-Open Eyes>> <<Omnivorous>> <<Appeal>>

<<Wide-Open Eyes>> allows one to see the opponent’s weakness.
<<Appeal>> makes it easier to perform coordinated attacks.

A skill with similar effects to my Eyes of the Blue Snake, and a skill that makes coordination easier. As expected of Gi Gu’s faction.

“I name you Gi Dji.”
“Understood.”

Aside from those, there was also Gi De who learned the Beast Warrior skill. And the wind using druid that I named Gi Do.

These goblins will be the ones to become the horde’s new strength, and will lead the goblins.

If there’re any problems… there’s nothing else except of that goblin rare that was enthralled by the Mad God.

I want do something about the issue, but…

But right now, I have to prioritize giving orders to my other subordinates.

The war didn’t only leave damages to the buildings and to the people.

There’s also the countless corpses of orcs buried in the holes we dug around the village.

As we won the battle, it’s up to us to do something about that putrid smell emanating from those holes.

I’ve never seen an undead, but it would be a problem if those corpses were to turn into one. It’ll also be bad for our mental health.

“Gi Gi and Gi Ji have arrived.”

At the old goblin’s words, I raised my head.

“Good work,” I said.

The two goblins kneeled before me. The ones who were called were the beast warrior, Gi Gi, and the stealthy one, Gi Ji.

“I want you two to follow the trail of the orcs,” I declared as the two goblin rares raised their heads.
“Understood,” they nodded.
“Go as soon as you’re ready,” I said.

After I sent the two goblins off, I called for the former leader of the village, Gi Gu.

“Gi Gu, I’ll leave the protection of the village to you. While I’m gone, do not allow the hunts to be delayed. And at the same time, you are to continue the village’s repairs.”
“By your will.”

Then quietly, I whispered right into Gi Gu’s ear.

“Also, please take care of Gi Ga.”

Filled with sympathy, Gi Ga bowed his head deeper than ever.

“By your will!” he exclaimed.
“Good. Now, go!” I commanded.

He is a noble class, and at the same time, he even has the Sub Leader title. So he should be able to do the job well.

As I dismissed Gi Gu, I called over the druid, Gi Za, and the receiver of the blessing of the Sword God (Ra Baruza), Gi Go.

“Tomorrow, both of you shall lead your own troops, and pursue the orcs,” I said.
“Are you sane?” asked Gi Za as he paid careful attention to my response.

To that, I nodded.

“The repairs of the villages are still far from completion, and we haven’t grasped our own foothold… and yet you’re saying we are to pursue the orcs?” asked Gi Za.
“Yes. If we don’t chase them now, the orcs will recover strength, and eventually come back. At that time, it’ll be too late.”
“…So it’s a gamble then.”

While the threat from the west is gone, we should pursue the orcs, and push on toward the west.

And because of the quickness of this attack, the village will truly be released from the grasp of the orcs.

“This time too… The one who shall prevail will be I,” I declared.
“Very well, King. I shall follow you,” replied Gi Za as he turned on his heel.
“As the king commands,” simply complied Gi Go.

And so, Gi Go and Gi Za left to prepare for the pursuit.

◇◆◇

From the newly evolved rare goblins, I left water manipulator, Gi Zo, along with Gi Gu to protect the village. I also left Gi De who learned the Beast Warrrior skill to keep up communication with the kobolds.

It might be a bit abrupt for Gi De, but I had his tamed dogs remember the smell of the kobolds, and then as I gave him some meat to bring, I immediately sent him off.

This is the so-called “line-up”.

As for the rest of the goblin rares such as the wind user, Gi Do, the Wide-Open Eyed, Gi Dji, and the spear user, Gi Da. I had them join the pursuit squads.

The next day, with Mattis’ preservatives in stock, we began our pursuit.

In our ranks were 1 noble class goblin, four goblin rares, and 30 normal goblins. I had them form three-man cells, and then I had the higher class goblins lead two group each.

In addition to these, there’s also the beast warrior, Gi Gi, and the stealthy Gi Ji who had gone ahead with a group of normal goblins under them each which totals to six normal goblins.

Then back in the village, the number of goblins defending, without taking Gi Ga and the injured ones into the calculation, is 38. Of course, I also removed the pregnant female goblisn, the larvae, and the old goblins.

I want to put an end to this battle as soon as possible.

As we were about to set off, a rare class goblin neared us.

“Chief,” he said.

The goblin whose head was scraping the ground is none other than the goblin that had received the divine protection of the Mad God that I had fought with yesterday.

“Please, King. Let me come with you in this expedition as well.”

It certainly might be better to have him somewhere I can observe rather than somewhere far away.

“…Alright. Go make your preparations.”

I immediately came up with a name to this subordinate of Gi Ga’s.

“I name you Gi Zu,” I said.
“Thank you. I happily receive it.”

As he generously nodded, I made way for the west.

TL Note: Gi Dji is actually just Gi Ji with a long Ji sound with a different character. But just Jii is kind of confusing, so I’m calling the goblin Dji instead.

Also regarding the speech of the druids being better… I can’t show it as well in English as there’s only one type of alphabet for the language, but the goblins normally talk with pauses and sometimes katakana mixed in with their words to emphasize their difficulty in speaking.

After having walked some distance from the village into the forest.

“Here’ll be fine.”

I confronted the goblin rare that’s been enthralled by the Mad God (Zu Oru).

“Ah, Ah, chief…”

The eyes before me swayed back and forth between various negative emotions. That jumble of emotions revolved around hostility.

“Mad God, I do not know why you have taken a liking to this goblin, but I won’t let you do as you please!”

“Gu. GU, GUuuVRv uAuuuV!”

Drool slobbered out of the goblin’s mouth as his eyes turned into two dots.

The goblin’s body recent wounds gushed opened, causing blood to splatter and his body to convulse.

Mad God.

According to Reshia, the Mad God is a god born during war. Originally, he was a compassionate god, but after having his friend fall in battle, the gravity of the sorrow he felt broke him, and he turned into a Mad God.

“A A, Ah chief, …W-Why?”

The goblin’s mind continued to be eroded by the Mad God, but it seemed to want to say something to me.

“LORD GIGIGI GAaaA HAsssSs!”

Gi Ga has…?

But then the pressure finally proved too great for the goblin, and the goblin swung his fist.

“AaaA aaA!”

That fist driven only by emotion tore the air.

But I couldn’t just leave what his saying alone.

“What happened to Gi Ga!?”

I dodged the descending fist.

“WHy DIddD YoUu!?”

The descending fist crushed even the ground, brying into it.

“AaaA Aa AaAAA!”

With his fist still bured into the ground, the goblin flashed his sharp fangs as he tried to bite the back of my neck.

What happened to Gi Ga!?

A moment after blanking out, I suddenly remembered the voice that called out to me while I was fighting the Orc King.

That voice was Gi Ga’s, wasn’t it?

The worst possibility flashed through the back of my mind.

Then while I was blanked out, thinking to myself, the fist enthralled by the Mad God landed itself into me. My brain, shaken, I was sent fling away.

I know he’s borrowing the power of the Mad God, but who would’ve thought that he would be this strong?

That power that could cross over two class differences made me wonder of its possible applications.

But!

“GIGIGIiiiGii!”

I held back the goblin’s fists. I can hear the sound of his teeth grinding. I suppose it’s expected of a mad man.

“What happened to Gi Ga!?”

Gradually, I pushed back the goblin’s fists.

“AaaA aaA!”

As the goblin’s fists were pushed back, the goblin swung his own head wildly in an attempt head-butt it into me. I lightly clicked my tongue.

I could only blame the shallowness of my own foresight.

If this goblin were an actual enemy, he wouldn’t pose a problem for me. But as I don’t want to hurt him, the battle is quite troublesome.

Strength and agility empowered by the Mad God. A maddened goblin that only recklessly wishes to crush the enemy before him. To make things worse, I can’t focus because of Gi Ga.

The goblin’s fist filled my vision.

–––Not good!

Because I couldn’t concentrate, I left an opening. And the arms that were being held down by me hit me.

That attack was far heavier than I’d expected it to be, and I ended up letting go.

“Tch”
“AagaAaA A aaA!”

Putting this guy down comes first.

The goblin was exactly like a maddened beast with his limbs on all fours as he stared at me.

“Sorry… Forgive me.”

I’m well aware that the goblin’s gathering strength in his limbs, so I took advantage of that opening and activated <<Overpowering Howl>>.

“GURUuuAAaA!”

But it had no effect on the goblin that had activated <<Mad Dog>>. But I knew that.

The mad dog of a goblin wouldn’t remain quiet after hearing that overpowering howl, and just as expected,

“GIGIGUuAAAaA!”

A howl that strained even his own soul bellowed as the goblin pounced toward me.

With as little movements as possible, I dodged that atta ck by sidestepping to the side. Then I struck the back of the goblin’s neck with full intention of breaking it.

I had taken the 40% damage reduction form <<Mad Dog>> into account with this attack, but if I were to make even the slightest mistake, this attack would undoubtedly leave a fatal wound.

This fearful attack… no, rather than to the goblin, this attack might be actually scarier to me.

But fortunately, the attack I let loose successfully knocked the goblin’s consciousness away.

Carrying the goblin’s body up, I ran back to the village.

The worst possible situation flashed through the back of my mind.

Gi Ga, please be safe!

◆◇◇

After the war, I had left a building to Reshia to use for healing the wounded. I entered that building with the goblin in my arms.

What I saw left me speechless.

“Gi Ga…”

At those muttered words, Gi Ga opened his eyes. His right arm was missing from his right shoulder. His left leg was also gone from his left knee which was dressed in bandages stained in blue blood.

“Chief… are you well?”

“Yes… I’m alright! I’m alright thanks to you!”

As I lay the goblin in my arms, I rushed up to Gi Ga’s side. The other goblins also opened their eyes, and they looked at me, but I couldn’t say anything back to them.

“Then… that’s good.”

Relieved at my words, Gi Ga closed his eyes.

“…Right… From now on too, continue to work for me! This isn’t the place for you to die.”

Gi Ga smiled, but only one side of his cheeks rose.

“Chief… how strict.”
“…Of course. The enemies that we will face from now on will only grow stronger and more numerous. If at that time you’re not around, then who will protect me?”
“I’m happy, chief. To hear those words.”

Quietly, I nodded.

“Chief, please…”
“What is it?”
“Please congratulate these men as well.”

At the other end of his line of sight were the goblins who were looking toward us.

“Right, of course. Of course.”

With my shaking legs, I stood up, and I went to each of the goblins.

Some had lost their legs. Some had lost their arms. Some had taken a hit to their head, making it a wonder how they were still alive. I walked to each and every one of those goblins. And then as I looked them in the eye, I patted them on their shoulder, and I thanked them for their service.

Then I went to Gi Ga again.

“Gi Ga, live,” I ordered him. “You have to.”
“But my body is…”

‘Can no longer fight’ is what he seemed to say as he struck his own shoulder.

“I will think of a way. So… stand with me once more, and fight with me!”
“Chief…”

As I said that, I left the building.

“…Well? Was that leg hopeless?” I inquired Reshia when I went out.

She must’ve been trying to be considerate as she leaned her back to the wall while she looked up to the sky.

“Yeah… I can’t compensate for the loss of a limb.”
“I see.”

Having heard only that, I left.

The fire that blazed within my chest could not be quelled.

So I ran. I ran and ran. All the way from the village to the lake.

As I neared it, I yelled.

“GUuuOAOOOAaAaAA!!”

I want to spit out my soul!

He can’t fight! He can’t fight anymore! The warrior who lives to fight can no longer fight!

I want to scream! I want to howl, and spit out this anguish!

Reshia can’t restore limbs. Even if she uses her power it’s impossible!

Of course, I thought of it.

And I was supposed to have been prepared for it too!

But… somewhere sometime, I turned my face away.

Intoxicated by the heat of battle, drunk in the fervor of defeating a worthy adversary, I failed to think of the result.

If I had only thought of it for a little, then I would have understood…

What it meant to sacrifice…

And its weight…

I… I…

The one who took his limbs away was me!

I didn’t understand it! I didn’t understand it at all!

The weight of 20 goblins’ lives!

I can’t waste it. No, I can’t waste their sacrifices.

So I mustn’t forget. I must never allow myself to forget this pain!

I will not run! I will not run away from this pain!

And I will definitely… definitely become the king!

“RUuuAARURURUAAaAA!”

Facing toward the calm lake, I howled.

Author’s Note:

He might not have been the protagonist, but I didn’t let him die yet.

Sorry if I misled some people with my suggestive words. 😀

The Man Picked up by the Gods – Volume 3 END

TL Note: Cannonball Rhinos -> Cannonball Rhinos. Extra chapter maybe Monday or Tuesday. Gotta pass another paper Monday morning, so yeah… Monday or Tuesday it is.

Edit: Sorry, I missed something in one of the lines. Ryouma retrieves all the corpses, not just the two parents’.

Volume 3 END

“Did I overestimate myself? But before that, what should I do about this situation? If I can’t pierce into the body, then not even my bloody slime will work. Moreover, aiming at their eyes and mouth requires that I stand right in front of them. If I were to do that, I’d be exposing myself to their charge… Oops.” [Ryouma]

As I was thinking to myself how to defeat the bigger one, the smaller one attacked me. Honestly, after understanding the situation, I’ve lost all will to fight the smaller one…

As I was thinking that, this time the bigger one came to attack me. When I dodged it, the smaller one… Wait, why are you guys focusing on me? You should at least… Oh, right, maybe I could do something if it’s the smaller one.

“Haaaaa…” [Ryouma]

Sheathing my katana, I faced my back toward the lake, and I filled my body with ki. Then I stood before the smaller cannonball rhinos.

The cannonball rhinos began to mercilessly charge at me. With a half turn, I dodged the horn of the cannonball rhinos. Then I grabbed its neck, neared my butt to the ground, and I entered the area beneath it. There, I touched the body of the cannonball rhinos with my feet, and with my ki charged, I kicked it up to the sky!

“Leave me alone for a bit!” [Ryouma]
“Kyuon!?” [Little Rhinos]

It was heavy, but I was able to kick the cannonball away. It kept flying as it drew an arc and eventually landed into the lake. Amongst cannonball rhinoses, they have a tendency to accept defeat when they’re thrown away by the horn, or pushed down. So I hope the smaller one will stop attacking me with this.

Still… it’s fortunate that I used my legs. From the weight I felt when I threw it, I don’t think I could have thrown it that far even if I had raised it up with my arms. This lake looks shallow, so I don’t think it’ll drown… That aside, there’s still the problem of the bigger one.

Immediately, I picked myself up. But for some reason, the big cannonball rhinos that was so eager to attack me before was not moving… But just as I was thinking that, the cannonball rhinos suddenly bellowed out a war cry as it charged toward me.

I decided to dodge it and move way from where I threw the smaller one. With my course of action decided, I fired off some magic at the cannonball rhinos to get its attention. Then I unsheathed my katana, wielded it with my right hand, while my left wielded the sheath itself.

Following that, I ordered the big iron slime katana and big metal slime sheath to transform. The form of the katana and the sheath began to melt, turning into liquid as they wrapped themselves over my hand toward my shoulders. When they finished transforming, the smooth, curved metal had completely changed into a scale-like silver and dark grey mittens.

Weapons that can cut have little effect against the hide of these rhinoses, so I’ll fight with strikes instead. There’s also the chained iron ball that I used to defeat the elder treant, but that one’s heavy, so if I were to use that, my movement would get dull. Besides, there’re plenty of trees around, it won’t be easy to use. Compared to that, this gauntlet might be a little heavier compared to the blade-form of the slimes, but it’s easy to use.

“My right might be… short!” [Ryouma]
“O!?” [Rhinos]
“…” [Ryouma]

I dodged the incoming cannonball rhinos, and then landed a strike at its left flank with my fist. My attack seems to have had much more effect compared to the katana as the rhinos let out a little of its voice. It wasn’t that loud though, so the effect wasn’t all that much.

Part of is it’s because it’s durable, but it’s also because my attack slipped when I attacked it while it was charging. I don’t think it did it on purpose, but it still feels like my attack got parried. I guess I should attack it when it stops moving…

I lured the cannonball rhinos into the denser area. If it’s inside an area with more trees, it should be harder for it to attack. At least that’s what I thought, but then the canon-ball rhinos ignored the trees, and it began charging recklessly.

As sounds resounded and tremors shook the earth, the trees were either bent or mowed down. The instances of the cannonball rhinos stopping also increased. Aiming for those moments, I curled my hand into a fist, and I smashed it against the cannonball rhinos.

Our battle continued like that for a while, but the cannonball rhinos still refused to show any signs of falling over.

“Hmm… On top of the weight of the slimes, there’s also the reinforcement from ki. If it was a human I was fighting, his cranium would have caved in at the power ages ago… This is making me lose confidence. This wanton destruction of nature is also making me anxious.” [Ryouma]

But still… I wonder if this thing can’t feel any pain. I’ve hit so many times, and it’s even crashed itself against so many times. I’ve even hit it with fire, electric, and ice type magic, but I’ve only either slightly burned or froze its fur.

I tried making a hole once while I let it crash against the wall erected by Earth Wall, but the hole was too small and too shallow, and the cannonball rhinos just went through the earth wall. All I managed to do was buy some time.

Dark magic works, but then the cannonball rhinos goes even wilder, and it becomes harder to predict how it will attack. Seriously, what am I supposed to do about this? I can stop its movements and buy some time, but my attacks won’t work on it, so I can’t defeat it.

“GUoOO!!” [Rhinos]
“Tch!” [Ryouma]

After how many times of hitting it with my fists, I realized something strange. This big cannonball rhinos sometimes suddenly stops. At first, I thought it just didn’t feel like fighting anymore since it just got hit back whenever it attacked, but then it would persistently start chasing me again. It would’ve been nice if it started getting a concussion after crashing into trees so many times, but apparently that wasn’t the case…

“KUOoOOoO!!!!!!” [Rhinos]

Ahh, it’s here again!

“You’re persistent! And your eyes are bloodsh––…!!” [Ryouma]

It was here that it came to me that a part of the cannonball rhinos’ sclera was oddly congested. Taking note of that, I began observing the rhinos. As the Rhinos bellowed out a cry, I noticed that there were some violet specks inside the mouth of the rhinos. When I saw that, I finally understood the reason behind its behavior. At the same time, I felt my face cramping.

“It’s the poison of the doping bee!” [Ryouma]

A queer congestion within the eyes and specks of violet are both special traits of a magical beast that’s been pierced by the doping bee. Moreover, when the doping bee’s poison has had too much of an effect, the magical beast’s consciousness will sometimes become muddied, causing it to be dazed. And the beast will alternate between berserk and being dazed. The interval between the two states doesn’t seem to be fixed though.

Took me way too long to remember… If I can’t remember my preparatory research during a critical moment, then there’s no point in doing it in the first place. I’ll have to reflect on this later.

But that’s that. At least now I finally know why this thing’s going wild, and why it’s so strong.

“It’s not just strong because of magic. It’s strong because the originally A Rank defensive power has been further bolstered… But even if I know that, the situation hasn’t changed.” [Ryouma]

I could feel drops of sweat forming at my brows. I can’t just leisurely stop moving. I have to think of a way to defeat the cannonball rhinos while dodging it. As I was doing that, the wound I first cut on it came to my attention. It was then that I remembered something, and I decided to try it out.

First, dodge the charge of the cannonball rhinos while letting it charge into a tree to stop it from moving. Up to this point is still the same as always, but–––

“‘Bind Ivy’!” [Ryouma]
“Guon!” [Rhinos]

I used wood magic, and the surrounding ivy wrapped around the trees began to wrap themselves around the cannonball rhinos.

The cannonball rhinos had its attention taken by the vines, but just my moving its body in all directions, it’s already began to gradually pull itself away from the ivies. Then with a strong step, and with its power poured into its limbs, it charged. At that, it fully freed itself from the grasp of the ivies.

“A few seconds at most, huh? Let’s try it! If it fails, then I’ll just run with all my might!” [Rhyouma]

Again, I lured the cannonball rhinos as I ran back the direction we came from, and headed toward the lake.

The trees were mowed down quite a bit, so the view’s now not as obstructed as it once was. Because of that I was able to get back to the late without stopping much, and was able to get there quickly. The small rhinos is sitting in front of its deceased parents’ corpses… It shouldn’t be a problem as long as I stay away from him.

“––––––!!” [Big Rhinos]
“Take this!” [Ryouma]

I dodged the rhinos that charged from behind. When I did, the rhinos kept going and going until it plunged itself into the lake. Water burst up high into the air. Again, I was reminded of just how much power the rhinos had. But I don’t have the time to stop moving. I stood at the border of the lake and the jungle to initiate my plan.

The cannonball rhinos that had charged into the lake, turned toward me as it raised itself. Then it began charging again.

“You’re strong, but you’re too dull! ‘Bind Ivy’!” [Ryouma]

As I dodged the charge, I used Bind Ivy. As the rhinos charged into a tree, and stopped moving, its body was wrapped in ivy.

Right after that, I jumped onto the back of the cannonball rhinos with my ki reinforced body. Then I grabbed the ivy, and began strangling the rhinos’ neck.

The ivy began to be torn off again, but I won’t let the rhinos do as it pleases!

“’Mud Pool’!” [Ryouma]
“GUoA!?” [Big Rhinos]

As I activated my magic, the water and the ground began to mix, changing into mud, and swallowing the cannonball rhinos’ legs. The ivies were creaking at the cannonball rhinos’ pressure, but because of the mud that suddenly appeared, the rhinos’ resistance vanished. The rhinos was no longer able to tear off the ivies.

Mud Pool is the combination of water attribute and earth attribute. It’s a simple magic meant to transform the land into mud. I learned this magic after I heard about it from the adventurers in Gimuru, and practiced it by myself.

At the time, it was quite difficult to do. If I casted the magic poorly, then even my allies would lose their footing. Because of that the adventurers mentioned that it’s generally only used when running away. But! Something like that doesn’t matter when I’m on top of a magical beast!

“’Exchange’!” [Ryouma]

I held on to the neck of the struggling cannonball rhinos while I used Exchange to bring out the adamantite rapier. Then cladding it in ki, I thrusted it diagonally from the rhinos neck toward its head.

But the rapier couldn’t reach past the tip of the rhinos’ hide. But I already expected that the rapier wouldn’t be able to pierce through easily. It was here that I changed my position while keeping myself from falling off the cannonball rhinos.

“Ha!!” [Ryouma]

With all of my strength, I pounded the heel of my palm onto the rapier.

“GUoOOO!?”

Because of the impact of that attack, the rapier that had pierced into the hide of the rhinos sunk deeper. The cannonball rhinos rose its voice, and its movements grew wilder.

“One more ––time!” [Ryouma]

I struck again with my palm.

I don’t know if you could this a tactic or not, but I’m doing exactly as I’ve planned. Stop the cannonball rhinos from moving, hit a vital spot with a blade, allowing it to stand. And then finish it off like that. The first stroke could only cut a shallow wound, but it still doesn’t change the fact that it was strong enough to cut into the cannonball rhinos’ skin. So I figured it should be possible to damage the rhinos enough so long as I’m able to focus my attack on one point.

I used the durable adamantite rapier for that reason. From the looks of things, it seems the rapier will be able to get through. This usage strikes me as somewhat absurd for a rapier, but so long as it works, anything’s fine!

After two more strikes, the sensation transmitted to me by the pommel of the rapier changed. After another strike, the rapier sunk deep into the cannonball rhinos. But I didn’t stopped there as I pushed it even deeper.

Using battle magic technique, I clad my entire body and the rapier in electric magic power. Then I fired off my magic through the tip of the rapier.

“’Thunder Bolt’” [Ryouma]

Intermediate electric magic ‘Thunder Bolt’. Just as the name implies, an attack that summons electricity to strike against the target.

It didn’t have much of an effect a while ago, but just as one would expect, firing it off from inside the body like this is quite effective. Immediately after casting it, the cannonball rhinos stopped moving, and it collapsed to the ground.

At that time, the ivies wrapped around the cannonball rhino were cut, and the cannonball rhino began to fall down into the mud. Immediately, I jumped off the cannonball rhino, and left the mud. I waited for a while, and after confirming it, I knew that the beast had died.

…………I was cutting it pretty close there. It’s good that I won~!!

“Even if it was strengthened by the poison of the doping bee, it seems it’s still too early for me to challenge A Rank and S Rank magical beasts… Not that I have any plans of challenging those. To begin with, it’s generally assumed that one has to form a party to challenge magical beasts above the B Rank.

As I muttered to myself while staring at the giant body of the cannonball rhinos, the smaller one approached me from behind.

“Heeey… you still feel like fighting–––Mn?” [Ryouma]

Just when I thought it still felt like fighting, the cannonball rhinos rose its two forelegs as it stood up on its two hind-legs. This is…

“If I recall correctly, this pose signifies a cannonball rhinos’ surrender, right?” [Ryouma]

It’s written down in the information I gathered beforehand. At first, I thought it might just be trying to make its body appear bigger to threaten me, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. But why? That’s normally something a cannonball rhinos would show to another cannonball rhinos that managed to defeat it, so… –Ah! Could it be it’s because I’d thrown it once? Or is it because I defeated the bigger one?

As I was thinking that to myself, I saw the small cannonball rhinos’ feet slightly trembling.  It might still be a kid, but it’s body is still quite heavy. It should be painful for it to raise its body up with just two legs.

“Let’s just leave the questions for later, and contract it now. It might be a B Rank magical beast, but it’s still a kid, so it might not survive out here…” [Ryouma]

If I were to accept this little cannonball rhinos, then… As I thought that, I activated the contract of the slave demon magic. When I did, the contract was a success, and the cannonball rhinos became my slave demon. I named the little one, Rai.

After that, I began to heal Rai’s wounds with the heal slimes. During that time, I had the grave slime retrieve the big cannonball rhinos and the two corpses that were most probably Rai’s parents.

Rai quietly watched the corpses be retrieved as he continued to receive treatment. I thought he would go wild, but I guess magical beasts understand the rule of the jungle well.

Not wanting to waste the ingredients in the corpse of Rai’s two parents, I immediately took them to the Dimension Home, and disassembled them. I retrieved their pelt, their horns, and their bones. The muscularity of the meat makes it unsuitable for humans, but it’s enough as feed for the slimes. As I was feeding them to the slimes for lunch, the mimic slime began to transform into a cannonball rhinos.

I tried to order the slime to stop the transformation, but seeing Rai look at the transformed mimic slime, and then cuddle up to it, I stopped. Instead, I ordered the mimic slime to stay in that form for a while.

…I don’t know if this is good for Rai, but I’ll just leave them like this for now.

Just to be safe, I ordered Rai not to go wild. Then we left the Dimension Home, and we moved again to leave the Great Forest of Shurus. After 30 minutes, we coincidentally came across the nest of doping bees that was most likely responsible for causing the big cannonball rhinos to go berserk.

The nest was about as big as a drum as it clung to the branch of a big tree. I took out 50 sticky slimes, and had them climb up the tree, and swallow the nest.

Of course, the doping bees attacked the slimes, but if their stingers can’t reach the nucleus, then their poison won’t have any effect.

The doping bees that attacked the sticky slimes were glued to them one after another, and they eventually died by suffocation.

The same happened to the bees inside the nest. But just to make sure everything’s safe, I blocked all of the holes of the nest for 30 minutes. Then when I saw that nothing was resisting anymore, I retrieved the nest. Naturally, I retrieved the corpses of the doping bees that were inside the sticky slimes as well.

Well then… A lot of unexpected things happened, but now I’ll at least be able to go back to Gimuru. I have my treatment, the store, and a bunch of other things that need to be done. And then there’s also Rai. I managed to form a contract with him, but there’s still definitely a lot of thinking to be done regarding the future.

Chapter 44: Mad God

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 5
[Class] Lord; Horde Chief
[Possessed Skills] <<Ruler of the Horde>> <<Insurgent Will>> <<Overpowering Howl>> <<Swordsmanship B->> <<Insatiable Desire>> <<King’s Soul>> <<Ruler’s Wisdom I>> <<Eyes of the Blue Snake>> <<Dance at Death’s Border>> <<Red Snake’s Eye>> <<Magic Manipulation>> <<Soul of a Crazed Warrior>> <<Third Impact (The Third Chant)>> <<Instinct>> <<Ruler’s Wisdom II>>
[Divine Protection] Goddess of the Underworld (Altesia)
[Attributes] Darkness; Death
[Subordinate Beasts] High Kobold <<Hasu>> (Lv1) Gastra (Lv1) Cynthia (Lv1)
[Abnormal Status] <<Charm of the Saint>>

Focusing my consciousness, I searched my own status.

[Skill] <<Ruler of the Horde>> The strength of your followers will be raised. Charm toward those of the same tribe will also increase.

[Skill] <<Ruler’s Wisdom II>> When fighting with the leader of another horde, magic power 20% UP, damage received 20% UP, and in exchange, damage dealt 30% UP.

The <<Ruler of the Horde>> has a good effect both for me and the horde.

The charm part definitely means that it will now be easier for adherents to appear. Meaning, on top of my subordinates’ strength being raised, I’m also going to get more magic power. What more could I ask for?

As for the <<Ruler’s Wisdom II>> it can basically be summed up into a skill catered towards a short conclusive duel. It’s a skill that kind of gives off a kill or be killed feeling.

It is true though that if the respective leaders of two opposing hordes could finish their duel faster, less lives will be sacrified.

It applies even for human opponents.

After I finished checking my own status, I went to see how my subordinates were doing. I feel bad for Reshia, but I’ll need to have her work for a bit.

As I thought that to myself, I walked.

I stopped moving for a moment to view the village that had managed to pass the night.

“Horrible…” I muttered.

I have heard Gi Za’s report, but I still can’t help but be surprised seeing the damages with my own two eyes. But on the bright side, the threat from the west has been completely dispersed.

With the threats from the west gone, the only thing left to threaten the survival of the goblins are the wild orcs and the spontaneous giant spiders. There won’t be any more raids to the village; a fact worthy of celebration.

Having a safe place to run to when things go south is really assuring. It makes it easier on the heart when going out to hunt.

We paid a price for it, now I must make something out of it.

As I forcibly made myself agree with that line of thought, I continued to check on the village’s situation.

“King.”

What called me was a blue skinned goblin.

“Lord Gi Go has evolved.”

Kneeling before me, it was the former leader of the village, Gi Gu.

In the previous battle, I had him take command as my right-hand man. And naturally, being the former leader of the village, he was able to do a good job. He is a noble class goblin, the highest class next to me.

“There are also others who have evolved into a rare class. Would you like to see them?” he asked.

They’re what we received in exchange for 20 goblin lives. I have to go and see them.

“Report,” I ordered.
“As you will,” Gi Gu replied.

Summarizing Gi Gu’s report, the one who evolved into the noble class is the samuraish Gi Go. While the number of goblins that have successfully evolved into a rare class is 6.

I’ll have to think of a name. What a pain…

“What are your instructions regarding the newly evolved goblins?”

Right… It’ll probably be fine to go and see them together. Besides, I need to properly check up on them. I also have to think how I’m going to make use of them.

“Call Gi Go,” I ordered.
“And…” he seemed to want to say something more.
“Is there still something?” I asked.
“No… there’s nothing.”

After sending off Gi Gu, I continued to go around the village.

◇◆◆

After a short wait when I got back to my house, Gi Go came.

I took a peek at Gi Go’s status.

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 1
[Class] Noble; Sub Leader
[Possessed Skills] <<Swordsmanship B->> <<Self-Made Man>> <<Veteran>> <<Chivalry>> <<Warrior’s Soul>>
[Divine Protection] Sword God (Ra Baruza)
[Attributes] None

His swordsmanship skill is quite high. If it’s this high while he’s still a noble class, then won’t he surpass me once he goes up another class?

<<Self-Made Man>> will cause his growth to take some time, but in exchange, he’ll get more bonuses once he evolves up.

<<Veteran>> will keep his opponent’s critical rate in check. Enemy critical rate reduced by 30%. Moreover, when fighting at the frontlines, physical strength 10% UP, agility 10% UP, and damage received 20% DOWN.

<<Chivalry>> will increase his charm toward fellow goblins by 20%.

<<Warrior’s Soul>> is the same as Gi Ga.

And then, the one that I’m most interest in, his [Divine Protection]. It’s my first time seeing a goblin other than me be blessed with a divine protection. His divine protection comes from the Sword God (Ra Baruza).

[Divine Protection] Sword God (Ra Baruza). Reinforces the growth of one’s swordsmanship. If the receiver of this divine protection can reach Swordsmanship A+, then usage of the [Skill] <<Mysteries>> will become possible.

Using a weapon other than a sword will cause the receive to lose the divine protection.

After seeing Gi Go’s status, I began thinking of a way to make the most of it.

Gi Gu also received the ‘Sub Leader’ title when he evolved into a noble class, but the impression Gi Go gives off is different.

Gi Gu is the type to lead the other goblins with skill, whereas, Gi Go is the type to lead others through his charms. Gi Gu’s way is more refined, but there are many amongst the faction of Gi Go who admire him.

Regarding the <<Self-Made Man>> skill, I can make the most out of it as long as I have Gi Go fight in the frontlines all the time. The skill will also keep his opponent’s criticals in check, so losing to a weaker opponent would be unlikely. He’ll also last longer against stronger opponents.

Right… If I’m going to make the most of him, it’s got be the frontlines.

“Gi Go, you did a wonderful job in our battle this time. As reward, I grant you this sword.”

I picked a sword out of the piles of loot we looted from the orcs, and then I handed it to Gi Go.

“Please excuse this one, but…”

As he continued to kneel down with his head down, Gi Go shook his head.

“I would prefer a curved sword rather than a straight one.”

Well, that slipped through.

“My bad. Right… The Sword God (Ra Bazura) is watching over you after all.”

Then in that case, I should give him the same type of weapon.

He did receive the divine protection from polishing his technique with the curved sword to this extent. So, I guess it’s not strange at all that he might not want to use a different weapon even if it is also a sword.

Well, as for me, I would hate it if he lost his [Divine Protection] after finally seeing another goblin receive one.

Picking out a curved sword that’s still in good condition from the heaps of loots, I bestowed it upon Gi Go.

“I gratefully accept!”

As Gi Go happily accepted the curved sword, the surviving, stubborn old goblin ordered for the next goblin to come in. This time it was a rare class.

“The next goblin has defeated three orcs despite being only a goblin.”

Three orcs?

Impossible.

“Excuse me.”

The goblin that entered was a rare class goblin that was a size bigger than Gi Go and Gi Gu.

[Race] Goblin
[Level] 1
[Class] Rare
[Possessed Skills] <<Overpowering Howl>> <<Throw Projectile>> <<Spearmanship>> <<Instant Kill>> <<Mad Dog>>
[Divine Protection] Mad God (Zu Oru)
[Attributes] None

If I recall correctly, this should be a goblin that was born after I became chief.

But the face of this goblins is completely different from before the fight. The once peaceful face has gone, wounded by war, and replaced by this face that doesn’t have a drop of charm to it. His gaze is twisted by hatred, shooting strongly against even me as if I’m considered an enemy.

Focusing my consciousness, I delved into the goblin’s skill further.

<<Instant Kill>> aim at the target’s vital point.
<<Mad Dog>> Due to receiving the divine protection of the Mad God (Zu Oru), it will no longer be possible to use any skills. But in exchange, physical strength 40% UP, agility 40% UP, and damage received reduced by 40%. Status abnormalities will also be lifted.

Isn’t this divine protection too strong?

Even without checking it with my own divine protection, I know that divine protections generally give some power in exchange for some side effects. In Gi Go’s case, he yearns for curved swords so much that he would even go against my will. In Reshia’s case, her body will sometimes be taken over her goddess… and so on.

Hmm… I wonder if this goblin is having his mind influenced by the god who gave him his divine protection.

As I felt sympathy for him due to the similarity of our circumstances, I asked him a few questions, and then just as I was about to give him a name…

“Chief, please… let me hunt… Please… together.”

Even without activating the Red Snake’s Eye, I know full well that the <<Mad Dog>> has already been activated. But as for whether he activated it, or it was activated, I don’t know.

“Alright.”

If I leave this goblin like this, he’ll be a danger to the horde.

I’ll have to save him.

After all, I’ve finally gathered some good men. It’d be a shame to lose them right under my nose.

“We’ll end here. The rest… I’ll deal with tomorrow.”

As I declared that to the old goblin, I went out to the forest with the goblin that has been consumed by the Mad God.

Volume 3 Chapter 41

The Next Day

I began filling in the hole in the wall of the village with earth magic, repairing it and reinforcing it. While I also began to demolish the structures within the city walls.

Fixing the wall is to prevent magical beasts from entering after I send off the undead, and create a safe area within the forest. The demolishing of the buildings is to ensure that I don’t miss any undead.

Besides, they were all so worn out that they would crumble after just breaking two or three pillars anyway. They were pretty much useless except for the undeads who would hide them, so burning them down isn’t really a hard decision to make.

When I went to clear out the village, I started by investigating each house. performing a memorial service for the undead as I did. The first division I got to was a dense collection of several small houses, so I took them down one by one, then I burned them with Holy Flame Carpet, cleaning up the wreckage. In the end, I decided to do the same, and clean out the rest of the village in the same way.

The undead that came attacking at me were all mostly taken care of by the grave slimes, the king scavenger slimes, and the light slimes. All the while, I demolished the buildings with the help of the earth slimes and the wind slimes.

The village is a bit too big for me to do everything by myself, but with the help of the slimes, I figured I could finish everything within a few days.

As the operation gradually progressed, I eventually neared the limits of my magic power. I randomly took breaks as I kept going until eventually dusk came.

“I guess I’ll end things here for the day… Oh, right!” [Ryouma]

Abruptly, I opened my Item Box, and from it I took out the guitar that I haven’t used in a while. Then I began my preparations to play the guitar and sing, chantlessly casting dark magic as I play.

It’s started to get dark, so I decided to stop the operation for the day, but just a little, I thought I’d use the remaining magic power I have, and practice the Cursed Song I coincidentally learned in the past.

If you’re wondering why I suddenly thought of doing something like this now, well it’s because I’m really bad at using this Cursed Song magic, and yet I haven’t practiced it at all. I did investigate the spell after learning it, but that’s about all I did.

Funny thing about this spell is that its good part is the same as its bad part, both being its area of effect.

It has a wide area of effect as it works as long as you can hear it, but because of that…

“I can’t choose the target. Which goes to mean that it’s an attack that doesn’t discriminate between foe or ally…” [Ryouma]

Fortunately, though, the slimes can’t hear, and the rimel birds can block off the sound with wind magic, so it doesn’t affect them.

But if I were to use the skill at the wrong place, then there’s a possibility that I might affect the people passing by. I also didn’t learn the spell because I need it, so because of all those reasons, I didn’t practice it at all. I don’t know if I can do something about its indiscrimination by practicing it, but I at least hope to be able to reduce its area of effect. There’s no one around here, so I might as well take this opportunity to practice it to my heart’s content.

As I focused, I began playing the guitar as I sang the theme song of an anime I had heard in my previous life.

But not long after, I had to stop.

“What’s going on!?” [Ryouma]

When I started to use Cursed Song, the apathetic undead in the surrounding area suddenly started hurrying toward me. Seeing that, I immediately had the slimes prepare for battle as I pulled out my katana.

“…Huh? They’re not coming anymore?” [Ryouma]

When I stopped using Cursed Song, the undead suddenly lost all interest, and they scattered away.

“Could it be?” [Ryouma]

I tried playing the guitar again as I used Cursed Song, and the undead all came hurrying toward me again. And when I stopped, they scattered away. I tried playing the guitar again, singing normally without using Cursed Song, and they didn’t come, so in other words…

“The Cursed Song has an effect similar to the grave slimes’ Attract Ghosts?” [Ryouma]

I unexpectedly discovered an effect of Cursed Song in an unlikely place. But while it’s great that I discovered something new, with this I won’t be able to practice here anymore…

“Guess I’ll have no choice but to practice in the abandoned mine once I get back home… Well, I won’t be going on trips for a while once I get back anyway, so I guess I’ll take my time then.” [Ryouma]

The undead suddenly rushing toward me kind of sucked all my strength away, so I think I’ll just go have supper, and rest now.

Day 2 of the Operation

I performed a memorial service for the undead that we lured yesterday. We also somehow managed to finish clearing out the section with many small houses before noon. Then after lunch, we dealt with the houses that were relatively big. Amongst those, many were either workshops or storehouses

There were many bound ghosts in them too. For example, there was this skeleton that’s probably a former black smith as he would lean over the hearth, and smash a rusted hammer against a rusted anvil ceaselessly. Those sort of ghosts never paid me attention even when I entered their workshop. But because of the sounds they made, they were easy to find.

After that, I entered the large houses. When I did, I understood that there were two different types of large house.

On one hand, you have the housing complexes that worked like apartments or inns. And were probably inhabited by people who can fight as weapons and armors could be seen littered all over the place. Moreover, there were also undead that could use the weapons quite well, so this hypothesis is probably true.

Then on the other hand, you have the houses of the authorities. These type of large houses had much more things compared to the others. Moreover, there were also undead who would fight while sitting down on a chair as they muttered orders such as ‘go protect!’ or something.

It’s not like the other undead listened to their orders either. After all, there’s no one left who could listen to orders anymore, so seeing an undead do that was kind of funny. Although, it also made me feel empty.

After I finished demolishing a few more houses, I neared the limits of my magic power, so I decided to take a break. I spent the break, practicing with several of the weapons I got from my grandpa.

The first thing I practiced with was the mythril spear that dazzled blue when light shone on it. It’s light and durable, but more than that, what’s really worth mentioning is its conductivity to magic, which makes using magic battle technique with it really easy.

Moreover, when I tried channeling my magic power through the spear to cast a fire ball, I found out that the magic power consumption became smaller. This is supposed to be a spear, so it’s probably the mythril that’s causing the reduction of magic power consumption.

The next thing I tried out was the thin, black-colored, adamantite rapier. It might look thin, but it’s made out of adamantite, so it’s a lot heavier than it seems.

I’m not well-versed with rapiers, but I do know that you’re supposed to thrust with them, so I practiced with the rapier by thrusting it into the pillars of the house that I haven’t demolished yet. When I did, the rapier easily pierced into a wooden pillar.

After that, I tried piercing the wooden pillars and brick walls at full strength with ki reinforcement, and the rapier didn’t bend at all. When I took it a step further, and swept the rapier against the wooden pillar, the pillar was hacked down despite the fact that I was only relying on pure strength. Of course, the blade didn’t bend either… Were rapiers meant to be able to cut wooden pillars like this?

The last weapon I tested was the adamantite katana. This one’s much more durable and sharp compared to the iron slime blade I normally use. It’s undoubtedly an excellent sword. Only, it’s quite heavy. I can swing it no problem with qi gong, but it’ll be quite exhausting in a long fight, so it’s a bit worrying to use. From here on, I should wait for my body to grow while I train myself to build up some muscles.

The Third Day

By noon, most of the memorial service of the villagers had been held. When I took a break, and walked around the village, I took the opportunity to search the area, and I ended up getting some herbs. Unexpectedly, I actually got some pepper that I could use for seasoning.

When I saw the pepper, I couldn’t help but raise my voice in delight. Pepper can be bought in the village, and in fact, I have actually bought them many times. But because they’re so expensive, they’re not something I use on a daily basis.

Buying pepper from a store in the town will cause the food expenditures to rise several times, so it’s actually a luxury to use it. I’ve also gotten used to food without pepper. And besides, I’ve already been living in this world for four years, so their common sense has already rubbed off on me to some extent.

Sill, I’ve been using black pepper in my previous life normally, so I personally don’t think it’s that much of a luxury. But even if I don’t consider black pepper itself to be a luxury, since one small bottle goes for a small gold coin – and to add to that – if I were to actually use it as if I was still back in my previous world, I’ll end up spending several times worth of a day’s living expense. Because of that it does feel somewhat luxurious. I might be making a killing, but it seems I still haven’t rid myself of my frugal mentality. Well, it still beasts being a spendthrift though.

“I might be able to solve my black pepper problems if I come here to get some every now and then. I found a good place.” [Ryouma]

If you take too much, a new one won’t grow again, so it’s important not to thoroughly uproot the herbs. I’ve heard this warning many times. And especially so in the adventurer’s guild as they’ll tell you the same warning at the reception desk before letting you off.

When I began harvesting, I was, at first, constantly warning myself to be careful, but when I saw how many herbs there were, I changed my mind. It’s because there were so many that even if I didn’t thoroughly empty the field, I would still have more than enough. Most likely, the amount I take from here will last me enough for the whole year.

Speaking of which, the plants were planted right next to the walls of the village, so it’s highly probable that the villagers were cultivating these. And because they all died, no one was left to harvest the herbs, so in the end, it ended up this many. As of now, there’s no one who knows that, so it’s a mystery.

Right after finish, I immediately put the black pepper I had gathered to use. I dried the black pepper with alchemy, and then I crushed it. After which, I then ate the meat of the undead snake with salt and black pepper. Because of the tingling taste and smell, the already delicious meat became even more delicious. From now on, my daily food will be quite luxurious.

The Fourth Day

Thanks to the power of magic and the slimes, I was able to somehow finish cleaning Cormi Village. There were no longer any undead inside the village. And even that gloomy atmosphere has been blown away. I also saw that there were magical beasts outside the village. I’m glad I took the time to repair the walls.

As I’ve taken and burned everything down except for my grandparents’ house, the place has mostly become vacant. It’s already become an abandoned village, so I think it’ll be better if I start referring to this place as the Cormi Village (Formerly). Well, whatever’s fine though.

In any case, I’ve finished what I’ve come here to do. Let’s go back to Gimuru.

I prepared whatever I needed to prepare, then when I went out, I blocked the gate of the village with earth magic. Afterwards, I brought the mimic slime out of the Dimension Home, and I ordered it to use Mimic to transform into a take ostrich.

“I’m relying on you.” [Ryouma]
“..Kuke!” [Take Ostrich Slime]

When I called out to the mimic slime, what responded back was the cry of a mimicked take ostrich. Mimic slimes reproduce even the actual body of the creature they are mimicking, so they are able to gain the full five senses when they use Mimic. Because of that, they would sometimes cry out after finishing the task I’ve given them, seemingly asking, ‘what’s next’.

Back to the Main Topic

After I had confirmed that the mimic slime was ready, I rode it… Clinging is more fitting though, I suppose.

In these past three days, I’ve been sending the undead off, and have been cleaning the wreckages. When I finally ran out of magic power, and took a break, I investigated the mimic slimes, and trained them by having them let me ride them. I also rode on them, whenever I went out to get some herbs, creating more opportunities for them to train.

The impetus behind that is that when I saw the mimicked take ostrich running around, I thought to myself, couldn’t I ride that? And so, I tested it out, and I found out that the leg strength of the take ostrich was actually really strong. It was able to let me ride it and run fast at the same time. Of course, it was slower than when I wasn’t riding it, but it’s still plenty fast, so there’s no problem on that front.

The feathers of the take ostrich were much softer than I had originally thought it to be. I also didn’t receive any discomfort when I rode it. Moreover, the mimic slime was able to make itself bigger with its Enlarge skill, so riding over it was actually quite comfortable. Also, the mimic slime is different from the other slimes in that it can feel fatigue, so I couldn’t overdo it. Thanks to the take ostrich, the way back has gotten a lot easier.

“Go!” [Ryouma]
“Kuke!” [Mimicked Take Ostrich]

The take ostrich rocketed off at my words, and it ran like a sprinting horse within the dense forest.

…It’s fast, but I’ll definitely have to put a saddle over it once I get back. It wouldn’t be nice if I fell after all. If this were a horse, I’m confident that I’d be able to find a saddle for it somewhere along the way. But because it’s a take ostrich, I’ll have to look for a saddle that’s meant for ostrich use. If I find one, I’ll buy it.

Around an hour after departing.

The magical beasts that attacked me from time to time were paralyzed by my Paralyze Mist and scattered by the speed of the mimic slime, so we haven’t stopped at all since we left an hour ago. Around this time, the mimic slime started getting tired, so I let it rest inside the Dimension Home.

I didn’t think it would actually be able to keep that pace up while carrying me for an hour. Apparently, I had been underestimating the leg strength of the take ostrich. Their speed isn’t just explosive, it can also last for extended periods.

It would normally have taken four hours even without any undead, but thanks to the mimic slime I can now get to the lake now with just a little more walk.

As I thought that, I walked. And when I neared the lake, I noticed the presence and sound of something rampaging. Apparently something was rampaging around the lake. Immediately, I used Hide to hide my presence, then I went out to see what the fuss was about.

What entered my sight were two cannon ball rhinoses. One of them was 2 meters tall and 4 meters long, a cannon ball rhinos with a body bigger than the average cannon ball rhinos. Fighting against that cannon ball rhinos was a tiny, one-meter-tall cannon ball rhinos, that could still be thought of as a child…

…This fight’s no good. The bigger cannon ball rhinos isn’t moving much, but the smaller one keeps challenging the other cannon ball rhinos only to be blown away. But it won’t give up. It stands up immediately after being thrown away, and tries again. The difference in physique is too big, at this rate, the smaller one won’t have a chance to win at all.

Still… Why on earth is that small one picking a fight with that big one? It’s already wounded all over, and yet it keeps desperately charging against that bigger…!?

As I continued to watch the cannon ball rhinoses, I suddenly felt something fly toward me, aiming for my head. As soon as I felt that something coming at me, I bent my body to dodge it.

What came flying was a tongue that looked like it had a sharp arrowhead attached to it. Following back the direction where it came from, I saw a lone tree from which the tongue could be seen growing on one of its branches.

Unsheathing my sword, I headed toward the tree, and I cut off the place slightly above where the tongue was growing from. When I did so, blood spurted out of a part of the tree, and that something fell to the ground. The true identity of what had gone flying at me was actually the tongue of an anchor chameleon. Apparently, it thought it was a good opportunity to attack as I was caught up watching the cannon ball rhinoses.

Thinking that to myself, I suddenly remembered the cannon ball rhinoses, so I turned to see how they were doing.

“………” [Both Rhinoses]
“Ah”

Our eyes met. Looks like they noticed me when I killed the anchor chameleon… Currently, I am facing toward the two rhinos which are both in front of the lake. The bigger one is situated diagonally to my right, while the smaller one is situated diagonally to my left. They both turned toward me.

…I’m not an enemy, you know~

“KUOoOOoO!!!!!!” [Rhinos]
“Wh–!?” [Ryouma]

After a few moments of silence, the bigger rhinos suddenly took a 180 from its previous behavior as it bellowed out a war cry, and charged toward me.

Not good!

Immediately, I hid myself, and jumped in between the trees, dodging the charge. The bigger rhino that had charged toward me, kept going until it crashed against a tree.

The tree bent at the impact, and large cracks could be seen extending from where the rhinos horn had pierced. Not long after, sounds of breaking apart resounded, and the tree completely fell down, causing the ground to shake.

“I’ll definitely dodge it if it comes from the f– woah!” [Ryouma]

That was dangerous!

I had managed to dodge the bigger one, but the smaller one came attacking too!

As I was wondering whether I had to fight them both at the same time, it suddenly occurred to me that there were two cannon ball rhinoses lying down.

For a moment, I braced myself, thinking there were more of them. But not long after, I noticed that they were already dead. From that, I finally understood why the smaller one was picking a fight with the bigger one.

Those two rhinoses were probably the smaller one’s parents.

As I was thinking that to myself, the bigger one turned toward me, bellowed out a war cry as it charged toward me again. Stepping to the side, I dodged it. And then just as I tried to slash it–––

“!? It’s tougher than I thought.” [Ryouma]

That pretty much summed up what it felt like when I hit it. Sure, I did hear that its skin was tough, but my ki clad stroke actually couldn’t cut through it. All it did was cut through the rhinos’ fur, leaving only a shallow cut over the rhinos’ body. It didn’t even bleed a drop. This is the first time something like this has happened since I got to this world, so I’m a bit surprised.

The attacks of the rhinoses’ are linear, so I can just dodge them by sensing the magic power they release before they start the charge. But at the same time, my attacks won’t work, so the situation isn’t exactly getting any better… There is that adamantite katana I got from grandpa though. Should I try using it?

No, it’s dangerous to use an unfamiliar weapon I haven’t even practiced with. If it were just a raptor, then it wouldn’t matter much, but this are cannon ball rhinoses.

But still… what’s up with toughness of their skin? I heard they used neutral magic, but could it be there’s also a hardening technique aside from just the strengthening one? Or could it be this hardness is just normal amongst the bodies of the cannon ball rhinoses?

I kept my eyes fixed on the two rhinoses while I continued to think of a way to deal with them

What spread before me was a familiar scenery I’d once seen before.

“How are you feeling, boy?”

There isn’t anyone but that woman (Altesia) who would call me that.

“As of now, the worst, actually.”

I need to keep up an abusive tone when dealing with this one.

“You’ve gotten quite handsome, haven’t you?”

Sarcasm?

The goddess of the underworld who narrowed her eyes was being patient.

“And? Are things going well?”

What things?

“That conquest and domination of yours.”

You are making progress, right? Or so her smile seemed to say.

On top of the goddess’ seductive charm, she also released a contrasting innocent charm. In response, I activated <<Insurgent Will>>

“Yeah, it’s going well.”

As usual, the goddess had snakes serving her by her feet. She also wore the same pure white toga over her body. And even the demonic statues lined up in the surroundings were exactly as they were before. If this place really is the underworld, well… I have to say it’s a lot easier to go in and out than I thought.

The goddess who sat in her throne, emanated a dignified and coercing aura befitting that of the ruler of the underworld.

Was she satisfied with my answer? Or was she not?

Her two golden eyes narrowed themselves into a slit like a snake’s. While her white porcelain skin was as usual, beautiful beyond perfection as if a sculptor had, to his soul’s exhaustion, carved her body. And she folded her hands together, resting her perfectly sculpted chin over it as she stared at me.

“Hmm~ Then I guess that means it wasn’t a bad idea to go easy on you after all.”

Go easy?

“What are you talking about?”

As if satisfied with herself, the goddess of the underworld (Altesia)’s face twisted into a smile just like a little girl who’s enjoying herself in her own deviltry.

“I’m talking about the divine protection. The interference has gotten weaker recently, right?”

So she was talking about the goddess of healing (Zenobia).

“So you say, yet your mood remains foul.”

I purposely provoked her. If she were to keep up this façade of hers as a seductive goddess, I’ll eventually fall prey to her charms.

Talking will be easier on me when she’s mad.

“You really are smart. You purposely choose to provoke me to weaken the effect of the charm you receive from the divine protection, but unfortunately, I have no intention of falling for that anymore.”

Seeing her smile like that, I can’t help but think she finds this haggling amusing. But contrast to her, her happy demeanor’s no different from binding me in chains.

“What are you scheming?”

Gradually, I’ve began to breathe harder. But even then, I continued to resist against that as I kept my temper in check.

“Nothing in particular… as of now,” she chuckled. “Just that, it’s been a while, so I kind of wanted to talk to you.”

Don’t lie!

“Oh dear. How vexing. I was telling the truth too.”

She looked at me with the complacency of a mother looking down her child, no, I suppose this is more the strong looking down the weak instead. The high-pitched laughter of the goddess of the underworld (Altesia) resounded within the piths of my mind.

“Also, it seems you’ve taken good care of it. That thing I gave you.”

*Thump

Suddenly, the coiled black-flame snake on my right arm pulsated in response to its master’s voice.

“Even Pitch Black (Verid) seems to have taken a liking to you. Looks like I was right in lending him to you.

Pitch Black (Verid)… is that the name of the snake coiled in my arm?

“Yep. A cute Hell Snake (Altea) I gave birth to. I suppose you could refer to him as your elder brother for the time being.”

Stop joking. I don’t recall you giving birth to me.

“Ha ha ha… Well it’d be great if you could recall that sort of stuff.”

While we were talking, it suddenly occurred to me. I’m not feeling the same pressure I felt when we met last time. Why?

She couldn’t possibly seriously just want to talk to me, could she?

“Come to think of it, I still haven’t heard the reason why you fight. Is Zenobia’s daughter (Reshia) the reason why you picked up your sword?”

Now what?

“Don’t make me laugh. Didn’t I tell you? There is only one reason I fight, and that’s for conquest and domination!”

“…Then you wouldn’t mind if you lost that girl, right? No tears, no sorrow, yes?”

Her gaze was sharp, piercing through me into my very core.

“…Of course.”

C-Could it be? Did I not make it in time? Have the orc overrun everything already, and set it all on fire?

Keeping up a front, I tried to act tough, but in the end, I couldn’t fool myself of my own feelings.

I am, after all, horrible at lying.

“Ahahaha, calm down, calm down. Zenobia’s daughter (Reshia), as of now, is still safe.”

When those words entered my ears, I couldn’t help but feel relieved. Annoyed, I grit my teeth.

To think I would actually unconditionally believe the underworld goddesses’ (Altesia’s) words on my own!

The more I want to believe her, the more she’ll lead me astray.

That fact tugged at my heartstrings, pulling both shock and anger.

“It’s up to you whether to believe it or not. But… danger is approaching.”

Declared the goddess with an expressionless face.

“The goddess of destiny (Liuryuna) has already found someone to her liking. Do you know what this means?”

Liuryuna, the third daughter who manipulates destiny, and guides heroes to fight against the forces of the underworld.

“You mean to say a hero has been born?”

The goddess smiled.

“Quick as ever I see. That’s right, it’s your natural enemy.”

If I, who is a monster, will try to subjugate the world, then there will definitely be an existence who will stand before me.

If he who leads the monsters to conquer the world is called the demon king, then the one who stands before that existence is the hero.

If I am to become the high king of the world, then the hero who possesses overwhelming power shall undoubtedly appear to stand in my way.

“As of now that hero’s but an innocent child that knows nothing. But it’s only a matter of time before he gains power, and becomes a hero.”

A voice that declared the absolute truth.

“And the one who shall stand beside the hero is no other than the saint.”

Forcibly, she slipped into the gaps in my thoughts, and she forcefully dragged out my innermost concern with the uttering of that one word.

“And that saint is Reshia?” I asked.

“You will lose her, you know?” she confirmed.

I couldn’t say anything back. Or rather you could say my mind had gone completely blank as words of denial continuously surfaced within my heart.

“Shall I lend you my strength?” Altesia proposed.

“What?”

The goddess smiled with the smile of a loving mother. Gently embracing everything, that motherly love of hers filled my chest.

“I’ve also been troubled much by those so-called heroes in the past. Besides, seeing a cute boy beaten black and blue is––, right?”

Spontaneously, I ended up wanting to nod.

I want power more than anything else.

The fight with the Orc King made it clear to me just how weak the goblins are.

But… the sliver of will left within me activated <<Insurgent Will>>.

“…What will you do? Do you want to try clinging onto me?”

Ahh, I would, I would… if I weren’t a king that is.

“I refuse.”

The fog in my head cleared up.

“Oh my, that’s rather unexpected. Why refuse?”

“I will fight on my own volition,” I said. “I will be the one to choose where my men die. I will be the one to send them to war. And it shall be for my sake that they will shed blood. And in so doing… should the day of defeat come, it shall be mine, all mine.”

The goddess of the underworld (Altesia) quietly looked at me. As usual, I had no idea what she was thinking.

“I am fighting my own battle. To cling to you is to accept my own defeat.”

That’s why I have no intention of clinging to a goddess.

“…Obstinate, huh?”

The goddess wryly smiled, and I smiled a bold smile in return.

“You gambled on me, so just shut up and watch! I won’t lose.”

When I mouthed those words, the goddess’ face went blank. Then she burst out into a guffaw.

“Ahahaha, buhahahaha.”

She held her tummy as she laughed out loud in front of me.

She’s laughing again, but as usual, I don’t see what’s so funny.

“Interesting… as expected, you’re really interesting,” smiled the goddess as she wiped the tears off her eyes.

As she finally contained her laughter to some extent, she clapped her hands.

At that, a gate appeared behind me.

“If you pass through that door, you’ll be able to return to your own body.”

Happily, I turned my back to the laughing goddess.

“…Hey…” she said. “At times like this, what do you guys say?”

My back remained facing toward her as I replied.

“The old you… the goddess of valor (the old you), what would she say?”

Just for a little, I heard her gulp.

“…Show your courage,” she said.

Nodding, I passed through the gate.

The voice I heard… although just a little, might’ve been shaking.

◇◇◆

“Are you alright!?”

When I opened my eyes, what first entered my ears was Gi Za’s voice, who was unusually panicked.

“What’s the matter?” I asked. “Where’d your usual composure go?”

When Gi Za saw me reply like that, grinning, he couldn’t help but nod back, dumbfounded.

“Damn it, seriously. You’re way too reckless I say. I think my life just got shorter just now… Well thanks to you, the casualties have been minimized though.”

I wanted to ask him whether he was always this sort of character or not, but I decided it was wiser not to.

“What happened to the orcs?” I asked as I raised my body.

“They withdrew as soon as you defeated the Orc King. Although it’s also because Gi Gi successfully lured the spear deer.”

Last night, I ordered Gi Gi to take 15 goblins under him to go look for herds of speer deer to lure and crash against the horde of orcs. He took a lot more time than expected, but that can’t be helped. After all, the only way he had to control the course of the herds was through the goblins’ Overpowering Howl.

It should be the first time for Gi Gi to use beasts too.

But still he managed to accomplish his task well.

“The damages?” I asked.

“The holes we’ve dug around the village are mostly no longer useable. The fences have also been pulled down. As for the damages to the troops: 20 goblins have been killed. But considering we managed to repulse that orc horde, it’s actually quite small.”

As Gi Za matter-of-factly reported the situation, I nodded.

The damages we incurred were much, true. But in the end, the damage incurred wasn’t fatal.

“I got it. I’ll take care of the rest. Go rest.”
“Also, speaking of Gi Ga–––“

I began to stand when Gi Za began to speak again. But then at that moment, I felt the sensation of something eating at my guts.

“Oi!”
“It’s nothing.”

The snake, Pitch Black (Verid), coiled around my right arm, throbbed.

What I heard was the deep voice of a man.

Show your courage, was it? ––––What nostalgic words, huh, little brother?

The voice came and left, leaving only those words.
