The Man Picked up by the Gods – Volume 2 Chapter 49: Meeting the Subordinates (2/3) (SHORT)

“Welcome to the laundry agency, Bamboo Forest! Please walk right over to this counter here.” [Ryouma]

“Oh, you did a pretty… GEH!? What’s the shitty old hag doing here!?” [Wogan]

“Who’s a shitty old hag? This grandma here might be a hag, but I sure as hell ain’t no shitty old hag!

Goodness, Wogan, you’ve been the leader of the adventurers guild for so long and yet your mouth is still as potty as ever. That’s why in the past you…” [Grisiera]

“Quit bringing up my past mistakes every time we meet! Good grief, and just how long are you planning to stay in power? Talk about being a tenacious old hag… So, why are you here?” [Wogan]

“Obviously, I was invited.” [Grisiera]

“…Ah, forget it. Ryouma, how do we get our laundry done here?” [Wogan]

“Right… Carm-san, Carla-san, since I’m going to be showing them how to use this store, I might as well take this opportunity and show you how things work around here. Let’s go in. Serge-san and the others too.” [Ryouma]

Ryouma opened a part of the counter and urged the six to enter.

“First, the customer needs to purchase a bag specially made for this store’s purposes. A bag for one person’s worth of clothes goes for 20 suits per bag. The bag will be used every time the customer enlists our service, so it’s a one time purchase.” [Ryouma]

“I’ll take one then. We fill this bag up with our clothes, yeah?” [Wogan]

“Yes. Also, today is a practice of sort, so as thanks, the laundry will be free of charge. The bag too. Please have one and wait a bit.” [Ryouma]

“Thanks.” [Wogan]

“Carm-san, Carla-san, when a customer pays, you have to put the corresponding special slate into the pole by the right side of the counter.” [Ryouma]

From under the counter, Ryouma took out differently colored slates that had a hole on top and below, then he pointed toward the pole nearby that could fit the slates just right, as well as the sideboard with an enclosure.

“What is that?” [Carla]

“It’s a tool I made to easily calculate the income for the day. In our store, the prices vary according to the size of the bag purchased, so the slates signify 1 medium copper coin, 1 medium copper coin and 8 small copper coins, and 4 medium copper coins. That’s it. There’s just three. So when the customer buys a bag for his own use, you are to receive one medium copper coin from him, and then you are to put the black slate into the sideboard. The sideboard has a gradation and can fit up to 100 slates.

Once you’ve reached a hundred slates, you are to write a one on the paper below the sideboard, then you are to bring the black slates back under the counter. You are to repeat this until work ends, at which point you are then to use your record and the remaining slates to count the income for the day.

For example, let’s say your record says that you filled the sideboard with black slates three times with 42 remaining in the sideboard. In that case, the income for the day will be 342 medium copper coins, which translates to 3,420 suits.

There are three different fees just for the laundry service alone, and then you have another three from the bags, and then one from the special service aimed toward adventurers that includes armor and weapon, adding up to a total of 7 different kinds of fees, so I figured coming up with a system like this would make counting the income for the day a lot easier. On top of that, I also want to find out just how much of which is selling, but of course, there’s no actual telling how well this’ll work until we try it.” [Ryouma]

After saying that I went back to Wogan, but the other members of the merchants guilds were glued on the device.

Tl Note: I’ll post again tomorrow.

I’m pretty lost with Ryouma’s description of his apparatus. I don’t know what the pole is supposed to do or what to call the sideboard. It’s not actually a side board, it’s literally a place for something that has an enclosure. I don’t really know what to call it APFSTHAE maybe?… Anyway, the next chapter part says more about it, so hopefully that’ll clear things up.

someone on Webnovel is copy paste stealing your translation and posting this story as his/her “Original” work

It’s ridiculous how QI doesn’t have plagiarism checkers nor do they have a report for plagiarism option in the file a report on a problem with this novel button. Just goes to show you that how much they’re okay with stealing.

      1. Geffrey DeAngelo Avatar

There might be some helpful people on NovelUpdates Forum who might be able to help with that problem. Lotta them have similar issues

It looks like they have a lot of stories like this, actually. It seems like it’s their way of posting content they don’t actually have any legal basis to post, there are a few JP things out there. Some dude has posted the first 13 volumes of Highschool DxD on there.

why yenpress? what have they got to do with it?

Is this your first Japanese web novel?
Sorry don’t mean to be rude
Yen Press has garnered a great deal of… hostility.
Due to it’s policy of having author’s remove their free web novels. Aswell as going after sites that had published translations of the free material.
To compound this, general opinion is their published translations are inferior to many hobby translations and take much, much longer to be published.
Very annoying when your half way through reading a series on a free site, it’s taken down and you have to wait year or more to pay for it.
            I’m just saying.

Normally I silent lurker/leecher but I have reported the user stealing the content providing evidence, let’s see if they care enough to do something. Probably not.

I think his system is just for tallying how much money they make.

Also just as a suggestion for this line “yet your mouth is still as potty as ever” instead of the word Potty you might want to use the word Vulgar instead

I would imagine the system is basically just three wooden dowels sticking out from the wall and then the plaques/chits he’s using are rectangles with a small hole in them to fit on the dowel.

As far as setup, I’d imagine these are put on the wall next to the counter in the employee area of the store. As for the enclosure…dunno, maybe he framed the area with wood or something so that it doesn’t look as weird for customers.

I guess using an abacus is too simple for Ryouma…

P.S. Every time I open this website I hear an annoying tune in my head: ji-ga-li-puff-aa-ji-ga-ly-puff…

That happens, just try not to look into its eyes when the page loads, and you should be fine.

An abacus does have a slight risk of being accidentally shifted. It’s good for calculation but not recording due to it’s intention to easily move. Now if the person knocks a few slates out, they aren’t going to lose track, they just need to put the slates back in place since they will know if they were knocked from the wall

It looks like each price has its own coloured slate and board, so whenever the customers pay that amount, the necessary slate can be used. Think of it as an abacus made up of separate pieces.

I imagine it as something similar to hanging bars on a wall with a plate that has different color for each fee to hang on it

Thanks for the chapter! Pretty efficient, since it allows you to know at a glance, makes less work for the employees at the end of the day, allows to have a better idea of what your market consists of & then to make predictions. As long as you have standard, limited prices, it is awesome. No wonder the merchants’ guild people’ eyes are glued to it.

If I may help you understand the system, Ryouma has created, what I picture as a board with poles on it, in any case there are a series of poles, each corresponding to a certain colored slate that has a hole punched through it, and measured to be long enough for exactly 100 slates. It’s function is more or less as Ryouma says, there are seven different things the store sales, and this makes it very easy to calculate the money, plus how many of each particular thing is selling, quickly and accurately. Basically whenever a sale happens, they just take a little color-coded tablet and put it on its corresponding pole, then when it reaches 100, write a little scratch on the paper, take off the slates, and start again.

It is an abacus type device.

7 spikes each representing a product.

One box of black slates that are the tokens

For each piece sold a slate is put on the spike for the item sold.

When the spike is full (100 tokens) a tally mark for that spike is recorded in the day journal and the tokens are returned to the token box (This allows 694 slate tokens to count 694 million sales as any spike that reaches 100 is immediately emptied, the reset recorded, and the slates returned to the slate box)

At the end of the day, the slates on each spike are counted and added to the tally recorded for the spike. These 7 totals are multiplied by the amount for that spike and summed. If no one made an error, this number matches the amount of money taken in that day.

Unlike an abacus, it cannot be accidentally cleared losing the record of income.

The reason for the reaction of the merchants is the cash register doesn’t exist in this world.

The day journal could implemented as 7 spikes under the counter. Each reset adds one slate to the under counter spike, but Ryouma is keeping it simple and difficult to lose the count.

Abacus is a calculator so it is easy to erase the memory. A cash register is meant to keep a record so it is difficult to erase the memory.
