The Man Picked up by the Gods – Volume 3 Chapter 149: Crime and Punishment… After (2/4)

“You can’t.” [Willieris]

“I know, I know… Honestly, I’m at a loss myself. Well, why don’t you just keep trying at it? Maybe you’ll figure it out yourself eventually?” [Kirillel]

“So there’s no shortcut, huh? All I can do is to keep on training?” [Ryouma]

“Anyway, that’s how it is. That body of yours still has a lot of potential to grow, so if you want to become stronger, you have plenty of time.” [Kirillel]

Indeed. This body is still in its tens. It’s unlikely that I would actually meet the end of my lifespan in just 10 or 20 years.

I also plan on continuing to hunt the bandits… Oh, right.

“Can the bandits that I catch be rehabilitated?” [Ryouma]

I was thinking of praying for those guys I caught. When I remembered that, I asked the goddesses about it.

But they all wore a difficult expression.

“Unfortunately, a person that has committed a crime has a high probability of committing a crime again. Especially, those who committed acts of banditry. Their guilds expel them, and they won’t be able to register again even after being released, making it hard for them to find a job. Of course, it’s not impossible to find work without a guild, but most jobs are taken through the guild since it’s a much more reliable method of finding decent people than just judging people based on their looks…” [Rurutia]

“Unlike Japan, there’s also a strong sense of ‘Protect yourself with your own body’ here. There aren’t many who would hire a former convict.” [Kirillel]

“I hear you hire the people of the slums, but even those people don’t have it easy. Although they haven’t committed any crimes, just the possibility makes it hard for others to consider them.” [Willieris]

” I can relate…” [Ryouma]

It’s a story I can sympathize with.

I can also understand the feelings of the employers.

Just thinking about the possible damages to the other staff after hiring a strange person gives me the chills.

But…

A bitter memory flashed through my mind.

“…Rurutia. This might be a stupid question, but what if I provided more opportunities for former convicts to be hired? Do you think that would make things better? We have plans to increase my branch stores. Although we currently only have three managers whom we’re raising, as the store continues to go well in the next few years, the number of managers and stores we have should also increase. When that time comes, we’ll need to hire a lot of employees.” [Ryouma]

“…It would still depend on how much they regret their actions and how much they want to change. Also, how much they can endure the prejudice that people hold against them. But just having the opportunity to find employment should make it easier for them to be corrected.” [Rurutia]

“There’s no reason for you to go that far.” [Kirillel]

Kirillel-sama is correct. There’s no doubt about that.

“Is there a reason why you think that way?” [Willieris]

“My past… Willieris, don’t you know about it?” [Ryouma]

“I don’t believe so.” [Willieris]

“Me too. The decision which otherworlder to pick is left to Rurutia and the others. The only thing we know is what Rurutia tells us and what we’ve personally seen from your life here in this world. It would take a lot of time otherwise if we had to remember every otherworlder’s life from start to finish.” [Kirillel]

I thought all the gods knew about my life, but now that she mentions it, I guess it makes sense.

“A lot of things happened when I was young.” [Ryouma]

That was my first year being a company employee. I bought some stuff at a convenience store on my way back home, but it was already midnight then. At that time, I happened upon a group of three muggers.

They entered the convenience store carrying guns and fired at the ceiling. The three muggers laughed as they asked the customers inside the store – including me – to bring out our wallets. They also ordered the clerks at the counter to take out the money.

The three muggers were all men and had hidden their faces. They laughed from start to finish. It was as if they were playing a game, almost as if they were intoxicated or something. Maybe they were, maybe they weren’t, but one thing was for sure, they weren’t in the right mind of thinking.

Frightened, the clerks started preparing the money, but they were so scared that they tumbled about and dropped the change. When the three saw that, they spoke in that same frivolous tone they had from the start.

“Hurry it up.” [Mugger 1]

“What? Are you trying to resist?” [Mugger 2]

“Trying to buy some time?” [Mugger 3]

After saying that they took the conversation into a disturbing turn, and then suddenly, as if one of them just thought of it, one of them pointed his gun at a woman.

“Okay! That’s too bad! But I guess I’ll have to teach you a lesson~!”

As soon as I heard that, my body moved.

Although I didn’t believe they were in their right mind, I knew that the man was serious.

All of their attention was focused on the woman.

It was as if they were watching an interesting show. They weren’t paying attention at all to their surroundings.

I knew they wouldn’t be able to notice me if I moved.

The result was obvious. But in the process, the arm that the three thieves were using to hold their guns respectively were all broken. One had his organs ruptured, one had his skull fractured, and one suffered damage to his subclavian artery. As a result, I was accused of excessive self-defense.

…I still remember the shock of the cops when they arrived and the confusion and fear in all the eyes that gathered on me.

What’s more is that my time in jail was extended…

So he broke the arms of men carrying guns with the clear intent to shoot an innocent woman, and it was considered normal for HIM to get jail time and people to be terrified of him…

    Oh those wacky Japanese.

I’d have been thanking him for saving my life. Yeesh.

Yeah, I frequently get annoyed at how easily the 3rd parties get upset at the wrong person. Seriously, in those situations, you don’t necessarily have the leeway to be careful with them, especially if it’s your first time in that type of crisis.

      1. ryuukun17 Avatar

If I had some crazy strength, and with my mindset, I wouldn’t mind dismembering their arms when I come across that situation.

I know for a fact that if I was in his place, I’d end up going excessive too, after all, it’s not like I know how much it’ll take to make them stop.

    3. kaiiayrennevaeh Avatar

It’s more or less the same everywhere though, to the point that for some reason in some countries including mine if your selfdefence makes any kind of damage to the other person or you try to retaliate then it gets treated as an brawl with both sides as offenders, no matter the circumstances, so you can’t even make a demand and take it to the jury without risking losing, I guess they don’t want to be troubled deciding how much truth is telling each one but is the same as saying don’t do anything even if you get killed.

I can understand fear towards someone who just crippled three men with guns, scary things are scary after all, but being afraid but grateful for the save is possible. If a scary monster saved me I’d still be grateful. As for the jail term, that is messed up. In my opinion, when the opponent has guns, there is no such thing as excessive self defense. Someone is after your, or someone else’s life, even if they died while you subdue them, I wouldn’t count it as excessive. Just my thoughts though.

he broke the arms, skulls and ruptured several organs. most would assume that he disshed some “extra” defence after the fact 🙂

Hu ?! Didn’t you read the chapter ?
Fractured arms is the least of the problem here.
Ruptured organs, fractured skull, damaged artery.

But well, even in Japan, he wouldn’t be out in jail .
That’s just the author searching for an excuse to justify that Ryoma has, once again, the perfect backstory for the current case.
Lazy writing as usual I would say

    7. Countrymage Avatar

It’s not just the Japanese, this scenario is the major inciting incident for many 90s action movies.

    8. Francis "The Douche" Avatar

You forgot that he also fractured a man’s skull and damaged another’s artery. What he did was excessive even if it’s true that he did it to save someone

      1. J Avatar
        J

They where alive so it wasn’t even close to excessive. They where threatening deadly force and received enough force to stop them from using it. He stopped short of killing them in fact he should be within his rights to kill them if it was necessary to protect his own life as well as the others in his defense such as struggling over a gun and being the victor in the struggle as it goes off for example. This is as another person said poor story writing since he is too perfect of a character he needed some thing to make him less perfect without actually making him less perfect.

so this is new he was jailed. ok its japan stupid? as far i know as long there were cameras even if he break their necks it be selfdefence even if it was extreme. specially since a Defenceless WOMAN was pointed at.. for what i know from japanese friends and law on there from him. that should had happen. well iguess this is intended that even his bad luck deny laws in japan -_-

Not only japan, even my country is like that. In my country case, there is an old man protected himself from the armed burglar and the burglar got killed during the struggles. Somehow the old man got punished for killing the burglar eventhough its for self defense. What an era we living of. So many irrational law

  8. Random Anon Avatar

It should be noted that at least in most of the US it would have been totally fine to kill the people in this situation, as they had escalated their threats to deadly force.

  9. ~Traveling Chef~ Avatar

excessive self defense? it was three ARMED men, who were about to kill or seriously harm a woman. they should be glad they are alive.

  10. Mikan Avatar

nah tha’ts bs, they are under threat of death. Would pass in any court (but forgot that he is being targeted by ***)

Thanks for the update. In my country you can end up in trouble if you’re violent towards a person who broke into your home.

In my country, I’ll make sure any criminal I defend from is dead. This way, he can’t bribe the judge and make me the guilty party. Doesn’t matter if I go to jail after that, at least I will know the other person will not go free.

Here in Ohio if someone breaks into your home and you hurt them or shoot them with a gun. They can sue you, and you can get jail time. But if you kill them and prove that they broke in, your good. We also had a case were a man was trying to steal a womans car at gun point. Her son wrestled the gun away from the man and shot him dead. The son was convicted with killing an unarmed man and sent to jail. Self defense laws vary by state to state in the USA. Some states are just more stupid than others.

  18. Raphalice Avatar

So all this talk about it being unfair to Ryouma that he was sent to jail… it reminded me of something…
dunno if it was mentioned here in the reboot yet or not but…

    Spoiler
IIRC the god of Earth did something that took away almost all good thing from Ryouma. His luck, his Happiness. Good opportunities. almost everything…

    or was I remembering a different Novel… I’m sure it’s this one.

well it does sound like bullpoop to most of you but something similiar happened to a friend of mine. Got attacked with a knife, broke the guys left leg and dislocated his right arm. The reason that he was fined for excessive self-defense was that he trained in martial arts (muay thai) for years. They said and i quote “As someone trained he should have been able to disarm his opponent which was not trained without inflicing serious injury”. One of the reasons many Martial Artists in my Country (Germany) dont certificate their proper training level. Im on the level of first or second dan in Karate, at least trained with these guys seriously but am walking around in the dojo with a white beginner belt xD they often joked about that if someone new came and they got haughty they first had to beat the “white belt” which usually ended up in groaning dummies lol

Fu man that’s normal reaction to someone that know someone is trying to kill someone or you. And if u can stop it u should by any means necessary

  23. Dancer Avatar

In US they would be allowed to file a civil suit forcing you to pay their medical costs and possibly some punitive damages due to use of excessive force. One their arm was broken they were no longer a threat unless they used the other arm to Brandish a weapon.

There is also a chance of criminal charges for use of excessive force.

Sound weird, but victims must not hurt violent attackers. Criminals do not give up their rights just because they plan to kill you🐶

Self defense is fine. But afterwards the lawyers will spend a week or two analyzing the situation where the victim had seconds & not enough information before acting. US law is really strange sometimes.
